So this lady goes to pull out of a parking spot but instead has it in reverse, breaks through the guardrail and drops 40 feet before the car lands on its roof and kills her instantly. Unless I'm reading this wrong...

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id ... _article=1
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A car plunged more than 40 feet from an elevated Post Office parking lot Wednesday, killing the driver, officials said.

Richland County Emergency Medical Services spokesman George Rice said the car landed on its roof after the fall near the city's main Post Office.

Police and a witness said the driver appeared to have been trying to pull out of her parking spot at about 10:15 a.m. when the car accelerated in reverse, striking a corner of the Post Office building and breaking through a steel barrier.

"The vehicle was spinning its tires before it even left the parking spot," the witness, Harold Baker, told WIS-TV. "It looked like she was just in total panic and shock."

The woman's identity was not immediately released.

Police and the coroner's office were investigating.

EDIT: I called her a darwin award candidate, but apparently I'm wrong.

Unless she thought she was gonna pull a movie stunt where she jumps her car off a 40ft drop and lands and drives off, I don't get how it's a darwin award candidate? Aren't there plenty of cases of where older people screw up and hit the gas instead of break and drive through buildings? Only this time instead of a building it was off a 40ft drop.

I can usually laugh at people think it'll be a really great idea to set themselves on fire while riding a motorcycle and jumping over 30 cars only to die because it was in fact, stupid. This just didn't strike me as anything similar, maybe it's just me though!

Named in honor of Charles Darwin, a Darwin Award is a manifestation of Internet humor, a dubious/sarcastic/cynical honor awarded to those members of the species Homo sapiens who have improved the human gene pool by "removing themselves from it in a spectacularly stupid manner." The more imbecilic the loss of reproductive capability, i.e. by killing or sterilizing oneself, the better the chances of an individual receiving the prize, thereby removing an inept set of genes from the gene pool.
I read the article and from what I understand this woman died as a result of a very unfortunate accident.

I saw an arcticle a few weeks about a pedestrain who was run over and killed by a bus. Would they be a darwin award candidate too?
so driving in reverse off a 40 ft parkade isnt 'spectacularly stupid' ?

There is a difference between cleaning a loaded gun and having it shoot you in the face and unknowingly having the car in reverse when you go to pull out of your spot and it leading to an unfortunate accident.

Heh, I didn't mean to jump at you or anything. I just really felt bad for the lady after reading it, as opposed to other "darwin award" candidates that I thought, "thank god they fucking did that and removed themselves from the gene pool"!

Oddly enough I saw almost the very same thing happen at the post office in Mountain Brook. Except the drop was only 9 feet, and they lived.

When I lived in Irving, Tx I stopped by the post office to pick up some packages. When I came back out, my car was not in its parking space. Apparently the parking brake busted. Between the car being on an incline and the jolt from the parking brake it was enough to knock it out of gear.

There was about a 10' drop to the sidewalk below a concrete retaining wall. The car went backwards off that and hit a light pole that was about 3 feet from the wall, leaving it suspended over the drop.

Mechanic swears that was probably the way it happened. At least I was able to have a tow truck pull it back up to the parking lot.
