This funny thing in an unexpected place reminded me of your maps find.
I was reading the Wiki article on vinegar, my life is just that exciting, and this was under the Apple Cider blurb-
"Apple Cider vinegar was given it's name by a frenchman (Megan Horris). She named it Apple because it came from apples...and Cider - because she is in love with a spider."
