Wii Internet connection issues

So I finally went out and bought a wireless router today so that I could get everything working at once, and so that I could use my Wii online. I ended up getting a Linksys WRT54GS.

I set up the wii for the internet, and when it tried to do a connection test, it would fail. I looked on the Linksys forums, and found someone that had a similar issue, and they explained what Nintendo told them to do.

What they did was have them go into their router settings and disable WEP security, do the updates for the Wii, then turn the WEP security back on as 64 bit encryption instead of 128 bit like it is as default.

So I disabled the WEP security on my router, and I was also able to pass the connection test, and do the updates. I then turned it back on, changed it to 64 bit , and made my own 10 digit code for the WEP. Now when I try to connect again its the same as before, it won't pass the test.

I called Nintendo and they basically just told me to keep my WEP security turned off and maybe only set time intervals that access is available during. I obviously don't want to do that, and I really don't want to log onto my router and disable security everytime I want to do something online with my Wii.

So I was hoping that maybe someone here had a similar experience and might have some advice, thanks ahead of time.

I'd be surprised if the Wii didn't properly support WEP as even my DS Lite does. But short of getting it to work, turn on MAC address filtering in your router to prevent other systems from connecting through it. Add your pc's mac address, Wii's mac address and refuse connections from all others.

If your wireless router doesn't support mac address filtering, take it back.

Good idea siji, thanks. The router does support mac address filtering, and I have my mac addresses for my wii&360(i think) written down already. Only thing is, I can't remember where to find my pc's mac address?

I'm surprised you had an issue. I have a WRT54GS and all I had to do to get my Wii connected was give it the ssid, which I don't broadcast. Connected right up, updated etc. etc.

I'm using WPA instead of WEP iirc. Might try that.

Neost, I know there are different types of WPA, which are you using? Also, I know that not everything is compatible (I don't know this much about networking) with WPA, so are there any issues with that and the 360/ps2?

I don't know of any issues with the 360, but then I don't have one either, just a wii right now and it works great with wpa-tkip (working from memory here).

I added the opera browser to my wii and have surfed with it a bit just to see how it worked and had no issues, the wii checks for updates periodically and i've not gotten any indication it hasn't been able to grab them.

Anyways, to get to your point - it isnt something I have looked at in a while - and I just quick ran a ipconfig /all at work when I was reading it - and I see nothing that says mac address- so I wanted to clarify instead of assuming.

I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't with you Noel - not that I care, I find your posts amusing.

Yeah, I checked there and it didn't help - and the solutions that the guy I spoke to on nintendo's phone support gave me didn't resolve the issue either.

Fuck the Security.

Disable it all, including the broadcasting of your SSID.

Just name your router something really fucked up, combo of numbers/letters/caps and you wont really have to worry about much.

If they dont know they name of your router they cannot connect to it, so if you do not broadcast the SSID then there is noway anyone can get into your network unless they logon locally from your PC and look at the router config thru the windows interface... but if you have people in your house spying on your network...arent you already fucked then anyway?

The Mac address is the one with the hexadecimal numbers (letters A-F and numbers 0-9) when using ipconfig /all.

example: f5-0d-4c-1a

IF that doesn't work, go to google and type 'mac address' and hit <Enter>

The Media Access Control (MAC) address is always 6 bytes in length. There will always be (at least on consumer devices) 6 hexadecimal numbers in one of the following three formats:

aa-bb-cc-dd-ee-ff
aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff
aabb.ccdd.eeff

The third format is commonly seen on newer Cisco switches and routers.

The first three bytes are called the Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) and can be used to identify the manufacturer of the network device. As an example, with the following three MAC addresses:

00-13-46-87-ce-b7
00-50-8d-97-ed-bd
00-d0-95-11-22-33

You can look up the OUI here to determine that the OUIs belong to D-link, A-bit and Alcatel-Lucent devices repectively. Knowing the OUI can (at times) be useful in identifying the source of network traffic.

Every device on a network has a MAC address, that must be resolved using the Address Resolution Protocol prior to communicating an IP frame. Thus if you're able to ping a device on your network, you can then open a command prompt and type: Arp -A to display all learned MAC address and their associated IPs. The format looks like the following:

The last column indicates that the MAC address is dynamically learned through the use of ARP. It is possible to make use of static MAC entries if desired, but requires additional manual network configuration which is typically undesirable because as the network scales it becomes increasingly cumbersome. Some older devices incapable of ARP will require static MAC configuration.

A MAC address of all Fs: FFFF.FFFF.FFFF indicates the broadcast MAC address.

A MAC address with a leading odd number in the first Byte indicates a multicast MAC address.

In Windows XP and above, the three way in the OS to view the MAC address are:
1. Open your 'Network Connections' window, and right click on your network card. Right-click on your active connection and choose 'Status'. Then click the 'Support' tab. Click the details button and look for your 'Physical Address' normally at the top.

2. Type Ipconfig /all in a command prompt window. Look for the Physical address for your active interface (normally the one with full IP information resolved). This can be slightly more confusing because you'll see the hardware addresses for active and inactive interfaces.

3. Using the device manager, select your network interface card, and choose Properties. Typically you'll see the MAC address in several locations.

In Funkmasterr's favorite OS, the Linux OS, the MAC address can be determined by typing 'ifconfig' followed by the interface name (eth0, eth1, etc.).

Edit: Xan, I have freeware installed that can see all non-broadcast SSIDs, so no... not broadcasting your SSID is not security.

I can also see WEP keys with some of the other tools I have though this is slightly more difficult, it can easily be done with off the shelf stuff you can buy at Fry's.

I highly recommend WPA and above with non-broadcast SSIDs and MAC authentication for all of your home networks. Most home wireless devices support WPA and above and it's just too easy to connect to any other 'secured' wireless configuration.

How the fuck can you see an SSID that is NOT broadcasted? You are a clueless fucking tool.

That is like saying, I can HEAR the fucking radio station, although they are not broadcasting any music... you fucking tool.

There is NO way to see an SSID that is not being broadcasted, unless you already knew the name of it prior and have it autoconnecting.

If it is not broadcasting, it is not broadcasting... imagine that!!!!!

Kismet identifies networks by passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time, decloaking) hidden networks, and infering the presence of nonbeaconing networks via data traffic.

Xan,

All I need to do is run a wireless sniffer. What's confusing you is this:

The Wireless Access Point (WAP) is not broadcasting the SSID. You are 100% correct.

Unfortunately, every device that establishes a connection with the non-broadcasting WAP is including the SSID (that isn't being broadcast) in the packets it's sending to the WAP.

You can see the non-broadcast SSID in the packets with Ethereal (freeware) and a supported NIC. Once you have the SSID you simply connect to it. If the WAP is also using MAC authentication, you just take some time, learn all of the MACs connecting to it and then clone one for your own PC.

If you have enough time, and the user is wirelessly administering his router with HTTP (instead of HTTPS) and no wireless encryption, the username and password for the router will be clear text.

WEP isn't really more secure either. It takes less than 5 minutes to crack once you have a packet and the appropriate software.

Your best bet is: Non-Broadcast SSID, MAC authentication and WPA with TKIP.

That's actually a semi-interesting problem we're having in some of our military installations. We actually have to turn the power way down on some of our APs because when there are walls of metal or something similar (like lead in Xan's case LEAD) and we get mad bouncing all over the place.
