Please enlighten me. Or don't.
I dont see how someone can enlighten you to make you like the show, maybe im wrong but im going to go with the "Or don't" option.
I am currently half way through season 5, started from the beginning of the series through Netflix.....the wife and I both love it and are going to TiVo season 6 so I will be caught up with all of you soon enough!
You start by saying that you have disdain for the show, which implies that you have watched it, or at least understand the premise, but do not like it. To follow that with a request for someone to explain why we like it to you is a bit confusing to the reader, if not completely contradictory. That might explain why you haven't had overwhelming response. It could also have to do with your attitude towards posters in other sections of this forum.
Regardless, I will attempt to explain to you what is unique about this show, which has contributed to it's having a large fanbase.
First, each season of the show is literally 24 contintuous hours. You could call it real time, or whatever...but it will essentially start at 8am (for example) for the opening episode, and the finale will conclude at 8am the next day. This creates a VERY action oriented show. You aren't able to use the 'skip ahead in time' device to deal with build up, so you need a story that is 'wham, bam, thank you ma'am' from start to finish. This is very exciting, and the near non-stop action and suspense creates a show that many people enjoy watching.
Second, many people are drawn to the character of Jack Bauer. He is a counterterrorist agent who walks a fine line between law enforcer and vigilante. He's hard to describe, and especially to explain without spoiling certain events from previous seasons. But nonetheless, he is definately the major factor (excluding the delivery device) that has brought this show continued success.
If you haven't seen it, and just decided you didn't like it on principal or something. I would recommend giving the season opener a start. If you previously watched a random episode in the middle of a season and were confused/lost and didn't like that. I recommend giving it another shot at the beginning of a season (or this season). If you watched it, flat out didn't like it, and didn't understand why anyone liked it...well then I hope this post helped you understand.

I like it when Jack kicks down the door of some terrorist hideout with his 9mm out while a squad of 12 fully armored SWAT team members with assault rifles come in AFTER him.
Season 1 was great. Season 2 was only okay, but Elisha Cuthbert got spliced into the story as an afterthought because she was so nerd-popular and her ridiculous antics added nothing to the entire season. I like Cuthbert but she shouldn't have been in there at all. S3 and 4 were back to being good again. I haven't seen 5 yet but I'm looking forward to grabbing the DVD set.
I would like the makers to bring it back to the basics of season 1 with less flubbing of the time. I really noticed in in season 3 and 4. People crossing LA in 2 mnutes etc. Part of the greatness of S1 was the painstaking attention to the time.
