Dwight Yokam is like the one country artist that I really enjoy listening to. He's got a lot of rock in his play style though... he's more alt-country, I think. Anyway, I agree.. he rocks. Not a bad actor either, he was in Panic Room with Jodie Foster. :)

I cracks me up that any country singer with a slight modicum of talent and creativity in their lyrics is always labelled alternative country or contemporary.

Then all you have left is the garbage fucking white trash with the oversized $15,000 cowboy hats and $22,000 boots singin' about the workin' man and their guitar.

Dwight Yoakam was good in Panic Room, but he was fucking great in Slingblade.

I agree, thing is Dwight Yokam has more than a slight modicum of talent. :) He has a great voice, and plays well also. Anyone who covers well Queen is a-okay in my book.

I label him as more alt-country because he has a rock element in his play style, he's still country, but he's a unique act for sure.

I think Yoakam is pretty good, I didn't mean to imply that he only had a little bit of talent.

If you really like alt-country then you should check out any of Steve Earle's albums. Particularly Guitar Town and Copperhead Road (where most of the songs he was backed up by The Pogues). Earle is one of the best lyricists alive for that genre of music. Naturally he's been totally ostracized by nashville. Well.. he's also a bit of a marxist and smokes OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of pot.

My main point was, modern country is a bunch of pole smoking bullshit; and if any fucking region in the world should be put on the axis of evil and carpet bombed, it's nashville. Although I'm sure most c&w cowboys live in beverly hills and malibu now.

hehe =)

Check out Rhett Miller, he's pretty cool. He's the singer of the Old 97's and has a solo album out that is really good.

Much h8 for country music as a whole, though.

I agree that Dwight is the man. King of the nasal singers.

His version of Ring of Fire is much better than Jonny Cash's.

Every time I hear Jonny sing, I cant help but thing that MR. ED would have done a better job.

Country music on the whole bites...It has about the same production values as pop...

The writers of country music on the whole are however amazingly clever...

I recall an interview with Yoakam where he was talking about current influences...primary among them were Radiohead and Pearl Jam...:)...

Top of the clever country writers list in my book is Lyle Lovett...I Love Everybody is one of the darkest most cynical and funniest albums ever written...:)

I wear grandmothers ring on my finger, on my finger she had a tooth of gold,

And just before she died she said, "Son you can have my ring but do I really have to go"

Lyle Lovett is more adult contemporary though, because he doesnt suck cock in nashville and sing about his pickup truck and paying his taxes on time. He is a great lyricist though, and he has a wonderful voice. It's pretty cornpone, but even a cynic like me would go bananas for a love song sang by Lovett. Guys always wondered how such an ugly bastard married julia roberts; but they just don't get it.

I swear to god I don't even know how the inbreds that infest texas and the bible belt can look at an insincere dipshit like toby keith with his italian silk cowboy hat that's worth more than the GNP of south africa, singing about how he is just a workin' man jes like the commonfolk.
