DOAX 2
I've been playing this game over the weekend.
I enjoyed the original Dead of Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball but heard this one was too similar to be worth it so naturally I downloaded it for free to take a look because I enjoy kyoukan making a fool of herself each time I do!
First, in some other thread here I posted the ripped DOAX soundtrack. The beach music works great for the game, which really is more of a social strategy game with eye candy graphics than an action game. Anyway, there's a 40/60 mix of old and new songs which turns out to be ok by me. The new songs fit in well and seem to be played more than the old ones.
As for the game itself, it's a bitch. The goal is to collect all 300 swimsuits along with a bunch of accessories and items of each of the nine women in the game. Each character has their collection of 30-40 swimsuits they may buy and the rest need to be exchanged through a faction system. Take away the bouncing hooters and this is still an interesting game although it takes forever to figure out the likes and dislikes of each character. Location, hotels, colors, items, time of day, etc all play a part in determining your "faction" with a certain character. Winning or losing while partnered with someone affects faction as well. Basically, the more expensive and slutty the swimsuit it, the more you have to butter up the recipient before they'll accept it. To do this, you need to play games like Water skiiing, Volleyball, Casino Games, etc to make money in order to buy stuff that will improve relations.
Thankfully, people are putting together lists for the individual characters that show their likes and dislikes, otherwise you'd be looking at several hundred hours to figure it all out. The casino games are pretty fun but can break your bank as easily as a normal casino would.
Besides the women (can I mention them or am I an instant pervert? Can I get a ruling kyoukan?) The scenery in this game is impressive. The water physics, etc are outstanding during actual gameplay.
This might be a good rental game for most, and even then, it would be nice to have a game save cheat to unlock all the cut scenes as I doubt anyone's going to go through the bazillion hours required to see everything. It's not like a Final Fantasy game where you'd want to play it from start to finish for the satisfaction.
Besides the out of control boob physics, the graphics look nice. I don't want you to think this game is all about oogling toons with big hooters. Here's a video that shows a little more class from the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moRLRGvHUEo
see? not so bad.
Oh yeah, there are a few different actual cameras that you use to take pictures in the game. The more advanced cameras are as advanced as the real expensive cameras making it a bitch to take pics even if you wanted to...shutter speed? F/2.8, f/4...various modes...wtf...how am I supposed to whack off to an out of focus picture taken with the wrong exposure settings? Kyoukan? Can you throw in a perv comment here please? I almost feel like I should make this a two part post and let you get a few perv comments in between. Just doesn't seem right.
Might be worth renting if you never played the first one but even then, I'd wait until Gamefaq or something provides a good guide to cut down on the wasted time figuring out how to play and get a few hours of game play in.
Peeps like Sparty who appreciate CGI will like this one or those that like collection/faction type games. Final Fantasy = women in skimpy fantasy outfits, DOAX = women in bikinis. If you can handle that game, I think you can handle this one without blowing a load on your monitor! I'm buying this one because I like to support games that try something different than the typical cookie cutter mold that they think will sell (they could have made a normal fighting game with bouncing hooters as well...that would be DOA4). Viva Pinata is another one in this category...may not appeal to everyone but worth encouraging the game developers to try new things.

The volleyball is exactly the same as the original with upgraded visuals. Same camera angles etc.
Once you get the hang of jet skiing, it's pretty fun and a decent money maker. The butt bumping, pool hopping, water slide games aren't that great. It was hard enough to get across the pool using the pressure sensitive full/half jumps but now you have to beat an opponent across.
The casino is upgraded slightly. More slots with varied payouts and risks which unlock stuffage. Poker is a decent money maker as soon as you figure out not to sit at the table when Lei Fang is there.
I wish they would have changed more things with the game and improved the game mechanics with volleyball. It ranks right up there with the original DOAX for showing off the console's graphics though.
Found an intro FAQ that might help explain the changes with DOAX 2:

This game is evil. I took the time to master Jet Skiiing and made a few million dollars and then hit the casino. I played Christie's slot machine and was sitting with 5 million after three pulls and then lost 6 million. Brutal. I suggest sticking to poker, if anything, when trying to make $$ in the casino unless patterns can be figured out. I noticed that I've had better luck in the casino depending on my character's comments at the end of the day when they reach the hotel. If they had a good day, it seems like they have better odds in the casino.
As for Jet Skiing, the water physics are the best I've seen in a game. You don't get to appreciate how good until later in the vacation when the ocean gets rough and you have to jet ski through big waves. The transparency, foam, splashes, etc are outstanding with the frame rate staying high. There's a learning curve to getting a handle on the controls and positioning your hands to hit the turbo but once you've got the trigger/lean down, you can have fun doing stunts off the ramps as you race. I haven't figured out if it's the naturally occurring hatred between certain characters or if it's built up during a single race, but if you start bumping into other racers, they'll come back and hit you as well.
I'd love to see a beach type game dedicated to a few sports (surfing, etc) with the level of graphics in DOAX2 along with improved game play.

For anyone that might eventually try this game out, I figured out a way to make some decent cash in the game.
Jet Skiing is OK for cash but not great. The problem is that there are only 14 days in a vacation before a cycle restarts. Early in the vacation, you race on easier courses against a single opponent which only gets you ~$70K. As the vacation days progress, you work your way up to races vs three opponents and can haul in ~270K a race (if you win). Along with the race standings, you can earn 1 or 2K for stunts. Basically, stick with the backflip over ski jumps and you get 2K for each of those.
After a day or two of racing, you will have ~500K or so in the bank (after you've mastered Jet Skiing and have learned the courses which take a run or two to figure out as it's a little hard to tell where to go the first time using the red and yellow course guide balls). Each girl starts the game with 300K, non transferable. Head to the casino during the night.
You can play Roulette, Poker, Slot Machines and Black Jack in the casino. The slot machines are too unpredictable and the best payout ones also have huge negative possible combinations as well which can break your bank quickly. You can use typical gambling strategies on Roulette and Black Jack if you want to try those but with poker you can actually study the reactions and strategies of your opponents for an edge.
You can play poker using 100 bets or 1000 bets. The ante for 1000 bets is 50K so you need at least 1.5 million to unlock that level of betting. Work your way up to 1.5 million and then raise the stakes to 1K bets (which are actually 10K min raises. The max is 500K per person for a 2 million dollar pot.
First, some general tips:
Always raise. It doesn't matter if you have shit hand in the beginning, always raise at least the minimum amount and you can sometimes get all of your opponents to fold before the first draw, or at least use their reactions to the raise as an indicator of their hand.
After the draw, if none of the opponents have raised a huge amount, always raise at least the minimum even if you have a shit hand. There's a chance your opponents will fold.
Almost never call. Always raise if you're staying in a hand. If you have a good hand, go for broke with the raises but otherwise, just raise the minimum over what the previous raise was. The AI for raises isn't that great. You'll see a girl raise 200K and then you raise the bet 2K to 202K and they fold. Not always but better odds than in a normal poker game.
Did I mention always raise unless you're going to fold? The opponents have AI set limits to raises sometimes so if you keep raising in small amounts, an opponent will fold eventually (not always). It's a good way to save your ass when you have a bad hand but end up in a big pot situation.
Besides raises, the other key thing to watch is number of cards drawn by opponents. They don't bluff well so when they draw 3 cards, they have a pair, two cards, they have three of a kind. If they draw two cards, you're screwed most of the time unless you have something that beats three of a kind. Also, 90% of time, if you have two pair and an opponent had two pair, they will have the higher hand. I don't think this it normal "fair" poker so just be aware that if an opponent draws one card and you have two pair instead of three of a kind, you're probably screwed.
With the general raising strategy in mind, here's how to play the various opponents:
Hitomi:
She has streaks where it seems like she can't lose if she stays in a hand. She doesn't bluff or rarely does if at all. Basically, raise after the initial ante and almost 50% of the time she will fold. If she stays in the game, be very wary of the number of cards she draws. You can't bluff her often either. Be sure you have a decent hand if you stay in a hand vs Hitomi.
Helena:
She's whacked. I don't think the AI cares what cards she pulls, it will randomly raise a huge chunk of cash. Helena is your meal ticket. Keep an eye on her. If she raises some huge amount right off the bat and you have anything worthwhile (even a high pair), go for broke and raise her to the moon. She typically won't fold but will keep raising the pot with a shit hand.
Ayane:
Like her character, she's stubborn. She won't go nuts like Helena but if she doesn't fold out of a hand, she will keep matching raises even with shitty hands out of pride or something. Problem with her though is that if she does have a good hand, she'll call you and then you're screwed as you can't try to mini-raise bluff her out of the hand.
Kotoro:
Pretty much a bimbo player but is a cautious player with her money. She usually doesn't stay long at the table and rarely wins. No big raises and folds a lot.
Lei Fang:
Above average player. Doesn't make huge raises unless she at least has something to show at the end.
Christie:
She's one you can figure out by reading her comments. If she says something like "are you scared yet?", there's a good chance she's bluffing so keep mini raising (if you have a pair or more) or go for broke if you have something better. But, if it's down to you and her in the game and she only drew two cards, she typically has something good so it's best to fold.
Lisa:
Not a very good player, sort of like Kitoro in that she doesn't stick around long and usually ends up losing.
Tina:
Another nut job. She's a gung ho American and raises often no matter what cards she has. Tina is another meal ticket. If she says something like "I'm in a pickle", she is most likely bluffing so there's a good chance you can raise her out of the game.
Kasumi:
I'm currently playing as her so don't know her strengths/weaknesses although she seems to be jet ski better than Kotoro...might be that I just improved over time though.

I sat down last night with about 150K and left with ~8 million. Jet skiiing, you can make a ~2 million a vacation (which in real time is pretty long with all the races you need to do over 14 days) and that many races and wear out your fingers (although it's fun in moderation). Sitting down at the poker table and playing the raise strategy while learning the reactions etc is the most reliable way to make some money.
Ignoring all of the faction gift giving required to exchange swimsuits, it would take shitload of money to buy 3700 swimsuits (full 300 suit collection for each character) and the bazillion accessory/items require to unlock all the various cut scenes and totally complete the game.

Here's some of that time saving info I referred to earlier in this thread. There's no guide that comes with DOAX2 that tells you favorite hotels etc so it would take hours of testing to figure it all out. There's a limited amount of time the game remains fun (if you like it at all) and plenty of hours of game play without the the added hours of finding this stuff out.
The following is all info gleaned from various DOAX2 forums.
Hotel list, (stay at the hotel of the character you wish to give a swimsuits to during that particular vacation cycle)

Semi complete Love/Like list with added info in linked thread:OK to start.
You need the suit wrapped up (in the girls favorite color)
You need to be wearing the same suit when you gift it!
You need to start a vacation and stay in the girls favorite hotel
(This is important, not your favorite, HERS)
You will need 10 - 15 love/like gifts
You must pay attention to specific girl conditions
Ayane (Christie and Helena also I think) hate mornings, ignore this slot or play vball.
Tina and Christie only like to be visited once per day.
Now, the method.
While playing the method, I continue to purchase any love/like gifts for the girl.
You gift the girl with like (cheap like nail polish) gifts until she starts opening them and not returning them. While doing this, she may return some of them. Open everything she sends back to you, and make sure it's something she gave you.
When she starts opening in front of you, she will stop returning (assuming you only give love/like stuff)
Anything she returns to you, that is in her love/like list can be re-wrapped and re gifted.
Eventually she will give you a gift at night (not a return but something new)
Time to attack, give the suit in the next available slot. If she doesn't show up the next day, I'm not sure what will happen if you wait a day.
I have tried this 3 times, twice with suits from Tina to Ayane which I know Ayane hates, and once with the venus from Lisa to Ayane, in all 3 cases the suit was transferred by day 4. I think that it is possible to transfer 3 or possibly 4 or 5 suits in a single vacation (assuming you have the zacks!)
This needs to be tested, between different girls, I will be attempting to complete Ayane's collection first.
Note, that as many have indicated, nothing get's thrown away, it's either immediatly rejected or gifted back that night.
All items can be re-wrapped for 1/2 the original price (this will save time while learning the method)
