Post by Nick »

Do any morons here actually think Rush Limbaugh has any right to get on like such an asshole about people with Parkinsons?

I've heard an argument by some stupid right wing talking heads that "allowing your illness to be exploited is disgusting" and berating Michael J Fox when in reality if you had any social clout and wanted to support something as important as stem cell research, whilst also having parkinsons and seeing it as an important scientific avenue that should be pursued extensively you would do it in a heartbeat.

Watching the dirty war being waged in the run up to these elections is insane, there really are some nasty pieces of work alive in the right wing media and they are going fucking overdrive this year.

I assume that's because they know they're going to lose.

What's sad, is Rush probably didn't even believe what he was saying. Rather, he knew he'd gotten away with worse and there are enough people that are stupid enough to repeat it enough times that it becomes fact despite the weight of evidence against it. eg, Iraq is connected to 9/11 in a lot of (stupid) people's minds. Still. Even now. Fucktards.

I know 3 people that said nearly those exact words when they heard this news. Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, and obviously never met anyone who had the disease he so casually decries.

Rush was saying that Michael J Fox was doing too much of this in the interview:

Image

Did anyone see MJF's response? Was he bobbing around more or less than in the other interview? I only saw MJF's response and he looks like he's in pretty bad shape so I doubt he was exaggerating his condition on purpose by not taking meds.

Pretty sad to see celebrities exploited on both sides...and also celebrities who think it's their day to do a good deed...er, or get their face on television for free publicity. I don't think Michael J Fox is either of these and seems genuine to me.

John Kerry refered to his celebrity supporters as the "heart and soul of america". I thought Bush had a good response to that back in 2004 while in one of the midwest states saying something like, "Kerry calls celebrities the heart and soul of America". That's all he needed to say. WTF. Celebrities are, in general, a bunch of prima donnas out to sell and extra album or movie ticket.

There is a difference between the Dixie Chicks and Michael J Fox though.

My uncle, who was more like a big bro to me, died from Parkinsons. Noone will ever know whether or not MJF was "acting". From my experiences though he was probably not. When you have Parkinsons you have ok days and you can have terrible days. Sometimes my uncle would show almost no signs of it and be able to play the guitar like he could 15 years ago and then the next day he'd hardly be able to stand or talk and/or would go into temper tantrums that he had absolutely no control over.

This whole issue is not that complicated, but absolute arrogance and ignorance makes it so.

It's a terrible disease and I don't give a shit whether or not MJF was acting at all. The point is that stupid "morally superior" religious ZEALOTS are keeping us from a possible cure that could save millions of people. It's important to realize that Parkinsons is just one of MANY diseases that could potentially be cured by stem cell research and these motherfuckers are putting RELIGIOUS views before the well being of mankind. By the way, these views and actions go against their religion, which teaches them to help those in need, not to proclaim themselves as judge, jury, and executioner by denying aid and hope to those in need. That should raise questions about their actions, but they(or atleast their political representatives) ignore these questions completely because it does not serve their power hungry political aspirations which are based on divisive extremism.

If any of these religious whackjobs had a personal experience involving Parkinsons they wouldn't think twice about such research that could produces miracle cures for such diseases.

I'm all for religious freedom, but when their freedom becomes destructive to everyone who doesn't follow their narrow view of the world(and even those who do), then I hope their religious freedom will serve them well- as they burn in hell for all eternity.

As someone with Parkinson's in my family, Fox's symptoms in the ads are entirely consistant with the kind he has, so Rush can blow himself on that one.

Fox has been a dual citizen for a long time, methinks, btw. He is indeed originally from Canada but I think he has lived in the states for essentially all of his career.

Kev,

Being someone who has religious background (while not being a religious whack job), the issue with stem cell research goes beyond Christians. This point is for Markulas, as well. Any religious base that does not condone abortion will also take issue with human embryonic stem cell research since it requires extracting cells from a human embryo. The embryo cannot continue to develop without these cells.

Similar to abortion, the question becomes, "At what point does human life begin?" If you believe that life begins at conception (with the formation of a human embryo), then you are going to take issue with human embryonic stem cell research since it means terminating the life of what you classify a human being.

On the flip side, if you believe that life beings at birth, then you don't really care, so extracting stem cells from a human embryo isn't even comparable to an abortion. In fact, it probably wouldn't even be a blip on your radar.

Most likely, you fall somewhere in the middle. A quick search of the news shows that fetuses as young as 23 (some say 22) weeks have survived. Granted, a significant number of these babies go through life with severe disabilities. But the underlying question still holds. When does a human life begin?

I think this issue would have been better presented on the national level as a debate for the citizens of this country. Unfortunately, it's an issue that has become heavily politicized and as soon as that happens, people turn their brains off and listen to the hype.

Isnt the jerkiness a side effect of the medication?

Someone told Rush that, and he immediately appologized, and then slammed MJF again for letting himself be exploited by the democrats. I like how Colbert summed it up. "How dare democrats use someone with first hand experience of a disease to promote the treatment of it?"

While I think Rush is an idiot, always has been always will be and I don't think MJF was "overacting" or anything, and I also the stem cell research is much more complicated than "when life begins" (as is abortion but that is another topic) I will say that in reference to the inital question... I will stand up for Rush's right to be the fat ignorant SOB that he is.

Unless it's defamation, which it wasn't, I believe people can and should be able to say whatever they feel. The rest of us can write them off as idiots or not depending on your own stance or intelligence I guess but that right is VERY important to me. People, liberals and conservatives alike now, who whine because someone "said something" need to STFU in my opinion. Grow a backbone and get over it... that are just words, are our psychies so fragile that we have to whine every time the fat low-self esteem bully calls us a name? hell no... but damn I feel like I'm more and more in the minority daily...

Well I don't think anyone is suggesting his actions were illegal. He was well within his rights.

I think it important that we call an asshole an asshole especially when he is doing so in an effort to sway political opinion. I think it is perfectly reasonable and important to call him on his bullshit, publicly. I wouldn't characterize it as whining.

I apologize because reading that it sounds like I meant we were whining I did not, I meant people in geneal about all sorts of issues as I called him an SOB and other things...

What I meant was that I think he has the right to be an asshole just like we have the right to call him one.

The people I'm disagreeing with are those they say people shouldn't be allowed to say things.
