Worth a rental. Extremely fun, and probably good for kids 8-10 and up (depending on your kid, and depending on whether or not you're) going to play with him.
The game is awesome. Nearly everything in the game is made of Legos. Somewhat puzzlish. Not very long to just play through the storyline, but there's lots of things to be done after completing the storyline. The game takes you through Episodes 1, 2 and 3. You will see spoilers for episode 3 if you play through that episode. Basically you complete each level while collecting 'coins' (can't remember what they're called), and pieces of ships, as well as other characters to help you along. You start out with just Obi-Won and Qui-Jon, but you end up with lots of characters. Each character plays a bit different.
It's almost impossible to complete a level the first time through getting all the parts you need, and sometimes you can't get through getting all the coin you need the first try. This is mostly true because you might need different character abilities to access different areas, and without them, you can't reach something. Once you've completed a level in story, you can go back through it in a 'free play' mode, and use lots of characters to get whatever you missed.
The best part is... pretty much everything is made of legos. This means if you kill someone or something, it breaks apart. It's really neat how they've done things, and though there's no speaking in the game, the music and sound (they used Skywalker Sound to do the effects) are awesome.

Fun game. It's only flaw is the somewhat quirky movement of the characters but the game is simple, yet fun to play.
Worth a look if you want an easy going game you can play for kicks when you aren't in the mood for games with a bazillion options and keys to hit. This one has like 4. Attack, Use Force, Interact, and Jump.

Edit: DUH!.. This thread was from the original game. My post below is regarding Lego Star Wars II that just came out. (That'll teach me to search!...Sorry for the necropost)
I give this game (LSW2) a huge thumbs up (playing on the 360)
Simple but fun. Lot's of depth and very funny in a 'cute' sort of way. Definitely a nice change of pace from the carnage and mayem of most current games. Titles like this are exactly what I've been looking for.
Co-op mode is great fun, and they have improved the camera view over the first game.
Just be prepared for the end of the game being it's own reward.
It's defintely a game for everyone, and getting all of the red and gold bricks, is definitely a challenge, even for the not so young of thumb.
My wishlist for this game would be an online-co-op mode, and online deathmatch!
Also, I saw an online article that said the company is going to make Lego: Batman (or was it "Dark Knight") next.
