Dead Rising - Posible Spoilers

Post by pyrella »

Not just the demo!

I only got to dork around with it for a couple hours. I died in extremely satisfying ways many times. I've noticed a few odd things - like in the demo, you walk down the hallway and you get the cut scene. Well I got that in the retail version twice (initial foray into mall (same as demo), where you get the gun at the end)...then every time I loaded to the same spot, it no longer happened.

The 'mission' she gives you no longer comes up either, and the way the time counts down is weird - one time it would be same as save point, another time it was 2 or 3 in game hours later. 7pm kept coming at odd times as well. I may just nuke the entire save file and start from scratch.

Also - how are books used? There is nothing in the manual about them except for the icon type, and I missed the onscreen 'help' message as it flashed off the screen. When i 'use' them, they say different things, but do I need to keep holding them, or reading them once does the trick..?

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

Yeah I don't really understand the saving system in this game. Just played for a few minutes before going to bed last night and was killed by Carlito trying to save Brad.

When I died my options were load saved game (my last save point was in the very first area I was in) or save game and quit. So I choose save game and quit. Then I restarted the game and it put me back on the helicopter! I still had my level and stuff ... but what is up with that? Is it fucked up because I saved when I was dead?

Anyway I will play around with it more tonight but I am not super impressed with the save system, or the time limit in game.

Other than that I have 1 word, Lawnmower, so freaking sweet.

Ok I think I figured out the save system, you are supposed to save frequently and go back to your last saved point, the save and end game is just in there for people who need an extra level boost to be able to beat the game. They don't explain it very well in their menus!

From what I got from the Demo help window regarding books..they are there to help raise your skill or PP when doing certain things. One helped with taking pictures that I picked up in the demo. Another increased PP for killing Zombies, but I couldn't use the book AND a weapon with it so I am not sure if I misunderstood that one too...

Books provide passive upgrades by having them in your inventory.

If you die and select save and quit, is saves Frank's stats but not the game.

The game is one of the few made in like the last 15 years that you can actually fail at. You will probably have to restart a bunch of times until you are a higher level and have cooler moves.

That makes a lot more sense. I could have sworn the tip in the demo said to actually equip it. Maybe having it in your inventory is what it meant.

Do you automatically learn the moves or do you have to train them? I got to level 3 last night and then died when the inmates gunned me down with the humvee. I guess it didn't help that it was like 10pm and I was mostly running from super zombies and couldn't see shit. Also does that mean I can just spend 2 hours and 59 minutes killing zombies, die and select save and quit and start over with all the shit I've learned?

My main goal is to get the zombie genocide accomplishment right now!

I kinda wish this game had a co-op mode. It would be tons of fun to just romp around the mall with a friend over Live and kill zombies.

Throwing this link in this thread since it might has spoilers as well:

Here's a sample of what's there. Funny stuff.
[Show]
That fiendish taskmaster is calling me again from his ivory tower up in the security room. It's weird, he always seems to see what's going on through the security cameras, but every time I'm up there he's just standing around a vent. Maybe that explains why he always manages to call me at the worst possible moment. Like just now. That guy I met on the helipad, Carlito, was going nuts in the food court and trying to kill me and Brad. The crazy son of a bitch had a machinegun and hand grenades and apparently a bulletproof face. Christ, I must have shot him in the head twenty or thirty times.

Little busy right now, buddy!Carlito is running around on the tops of the restaurants in the food court cackling and throwing grenades at me. I'm trying to keep cover and step out just long enough to pop a couple rounds into his face. Things are going pretty good and then out of the blue BZZP, BZZP! Otis has something to say!

I answer and of course immediately suck about ten bullets through my lungs, but that's fine because I'm a good photographer and some of my Pulitzer-worthy shots have made it so that I can absorb unbelievable amounts of punishment. Well, maybe not as much as Carlito, but I'm getting off track here. Otis is complaining about some woman he sees barricaded inside a jewelry store.

I'm like, "let me get this straight, you called me in the middle of a fight with a guy throwing hand grenades at me to tell me that you found a woman safely barricaded inside a jewelry store?"

There is silence on the other end for a couple seconds and then Otis just says, "yeop."

When it doesn't matter, Otis is a man of few words.

You automaticaly learn moves as you level up, it will come up on your screen when you level if you learned something.

killing the prisoners
[Show]
they easily get stuck on trees and other objects, kill the gunner first, the best way to do this is with a hand gun or other ranged weapon. And bring some food!

If you have gone around the mall a few times, one of the second or third times you hit the food court, otis lets you know about using the blender.

Where the photo guy..Kent i think it is..is hanging out - Columbian Roasters - take oj and a pie, stick it in a blender = 45 seconds of invulnerability juice.

Get a few handguns, pop outside, have the jeep come to you, drink invuln juice, and go to town on the gunner. Take the machine gun off and smoke his buddies, then go on a splatter spree with the jeep =P

The machine gun off the back of the jeep is the best weapon in the game that isn't an unlockable. It's hard to carry around because you can't do anything with it in your hands but shoot, but if you are having trouble with a boss and it's night time you can try to waste the guys on the jeep and use the gun on the boss.

The first Carlito encounter is insanely easy.
[Show]
Facing the food court run up the left hand side of the stairs and turn right, look up. You will see 3 windows Position yourself about 10 feet behind the windows and Carlito will be there shooting at you, but the bullets won't go through the window. Headshot him once or twice and he will switch from the far right or left window and alternate. Do this a few times and he'll run around behind you and duck behind the signs ontop of the actual food court stores.

From where you are standing turn left and you will see some stacked crates, climb ontop and jump up to where carlito was previously attacking you from and turn right. Get onto the roofs of the stores and run around behind the signs until you see Carlito (stick to the right side of the roofs)

There is a position where you will be in full view of carlito very close but his bullets will not be able to hit you due to the angle he's firing at you from and one of the shop signs. When he stops to reload run at him. If you are slow you'll take one flurry of fire, continue running at him and jump from the roof you are on to the lower roof he is on (it's like a foot difference) and again if you are slow you'll take one more round of fire. After that just goto town on him with a knife/katana/whatever and it's pretty much over from there.
I've been doing this run over and over to level up easily and have this entire thing down to like a 3 or 4 minute battle.

The 2nd one is harder but I had no food when I went at him and got wasted trying to melee him :/

Here's a guide from Gamespot that looks useful. Part of it is a walkthrough but it also lists weapons, books, best pictures to take etc.
