IE7 to be distributed via Windows Update as High Priority

Post by Animalor »

MS is going to try and get everyone up to IE7 as fast as it can by pushing it through Windows Update as a High Priority update in the 4th quarter of this year.

http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2 ... 342,00.asp

They're released a toolkit for Network Admins that want to prevent this from being installed at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65788
The toolkit consists of a script and a group policy template to control it's behavior.

If you're in charge of a corporate network and have apps that require IE6, I'd get on the ball with deploying this tool now.

I know I'll be bring it up with my boss when he gets back to the office.

Hell, I might deploy that just to avoid the wasted download; nearly everyone we work with uses Firefox by default. Even those that DO want it, would rather download it once and distribute it via the network, than download it 20-30 times.

We have installed the beta of IE7 on a couple computers around the office here and are having troubles with it. I always like to wait a few updates before downlaoding any new microsoft stuff.

I've only run into a couple of websites that have had some issues with IE7 (http://www.bell.ca for one).

The only real issue for us currently is Siebel because of the ActiveX change(our upgrade should be happening shortly). Otherwise all our internal ressources work fine with IE7 (I've been using it since Beta1).

I'm still gonna recommend holding it off for the rest of the org for a few months.

did IE7 b3 add the ability to open a search result into a new tab? I'm not going to use IE7 until that gets added. Seems like a no brainer but the frist two betas couldn't do it.

Otherwise, IE7 seems usable. Maxthon is still the best browser option atm for tabs which seems to be the most useful upgrade to most browsers over IE6. (tried Firefox, not as good for tabs IMO)

If you get started now, you might be able to whip your team of developers hard enough to get everything switched to work with IE7...or would you rather fill this forum with requests to do their job and get you a raise?

I had to think really hard to remember who Funkmasterr was, thankfully he posted here so I could get a little reminder. Now where is Kylere with his "IE IS THE DEBIL!" comment?
