BSOD

Post by redeemed »

hello, question-

I've started to get the "blue screen of death" when playing online rpg's -- on my eq-progressionserver-newb and had a friend playing wow here that had the same error -- so I assume it's online game related~
anyway do any of you uber techz0rs know how to get rid of this? I tried the all knowing google oracle but to no avail~
the first words on the blue screen (before I get kicked to restart) are "a problem has been encountered and windows has to shut down..."
the blue screen flashes and I auto-restart
I don't get online much to game anymore but when I do being kicked off by this shit is highly annoying~
any insight is appreciated :<3:

A few things can cause a BSOD. The fact that you're playing an online only game probably isn't one of em.

Bad drivers are the most common cause. Hardware that is overheating or starting to go(RAM/Mobo/Video card/Processor are the likely candidates of a hardware issue) will cause BSOD's or other wierd and very random problems. Corrupted DLL's are also a possible cause as well.

Check your CPU cooling etc... playing EQ you're running the CPU at 100% all the time, so could just be heat issues.

In my sleep deprived state, I read the title as BDSM so I clicked on it....they really aren't even that close but it still popped right into my head!

The first thing I thought of when you said online and BSOD is that nasty worm/virus that went around a year or two ago that rebooted your computer if you went online. I'd figure windows updates have that under control so it must be something else.

Is it happening only with online games or have you noticed it during any other online activity?

Back when I played EQ I encountered an issue with lockups and BSODs, and indeed it was an overheating video card. When I have problems, checking the fans, going into the BIOS and checking temps, is the first thing I do.

only happens during online games, never seen it otherwise..
in fact, until a friend of mine "fixed" my eqgame.exe error by uploading (installing, whatever) a new dll I had never seen the BSOD.. it just started happening after that, but since he did "fix" eq (in that I was able to play it again) I don't know if it would be worth it to go back and try to find what he did and then re-do it with another dll .. /sigh
oh well, I'm probably not meant to be a gamer anymore anyway .. this must be a sign ;p

thanks for your inputs!

oh p.s. ~ if it is a corrupted .dll file how do I find out which one it is?
someone needs to just come over and fix this, I'll pay in baked goods and, um, hugs

Do you use TeamSpeak while playing your games?

Does he qualify for the baked goods and hugs or not because he caused the problem in the first place?
