So my videocard blew out. again.

Post by MooZilla »

Last night my GeForce Ti4200 blew out while playing Guild Wars. My monitor just went black. About a 23942398 restarts later i came to the conclusion that the videocard was trashed somehow. I opened up my case and took it out. Almost burned my fingers off - it was fucking hot.

A few months ago the Ti4600 i got for my birthday a while back. It had a good 2 and a half years running on it. I feel like i keep getting fucked over by nVidia. The warranty on both of those cards is no good. Not only do $0 and no backup card, MY ONBOARD GRAPHICS IS SHIT. Fuck DELL and their 4x AGP motherboards RDRAM. Who knows what i'm running on right now for my graphics.

What can i do about my situation right now with no graphics card and no cash? >_< I guess i could try to beg my friends for one of their old cards still lying around. Does anybody here have an old card laying around? I might even be able to work out something around $100 for a decent used card if anybody is willing.

800 x 600 resolution @ 16 bits pwns me.

If the rest of your system is as old as that card, you might make some cash selling it to a museum.

If you have 100.00, I'm sure there's a card for sale that's at least as good as a 4200

Pick one out for whatever you can afford and buy it:

make sure you get the right bus (I'm guessing it's AGP)

I'm trying to remember when the 4200 or 4600 came out heh. I cannot remember that far back!

in all seriousness. I wouldn't really come to the conclusion that nvidia cards suck from your experiences. You were using some really out of date equipment and running some really new software. It's to be expected.

If i ever bought another card i'd want an nVidia. I understand now they make cards that are better than ATi, hands down. I just feel owned seeing as how both cards blew out within a 2 month period.

nVidia and ATi just make the chips, not the *card*

If you want a quality video card that is going to last for a few years, look at the brand of the *card* not the chipset.

<queue fanboi to tell me how nVidia is so good that it can make up for shoddy manufacturing of cards/video ram>

Buy an EVGA card. They have lifetime warranties and from what I've read on the message boards, people have good experiences with getting exchanges, etc.

My current card is EVGA. Working ok so far!

EVGA and BFG are definitely the ways to go.

The ti4200/4600 are over 4 years old... they were released in the same time frame as Intel released their 2 GHz P4s.

Both EVGA and BFG have lifetime warranties on their boards and a no hassle RFA process. I've personally dealt with BFG and have heard nothing but good things from people who have dealt with getting replacements from EVGA.

The 4600 was a VisionTek. I always thought they were a reputable company. No idea on the 4200 though, it came packaged with the dell i bought a while ago.

Ha! After i a few minutes of browsing newegg i found this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814143056

A few features make it seem like a good card to me: One, the Open GL 2.0. All of the other cards below the $150 price point featured only Open GL 1.5. Two, it's from one of the reccomended, reputable companies. I understand that there are many large names out in the videocard business (Leadtek, Gigabyte, PNY, Asus, etc.) but BFG manufactured cards have a lifetime warranty. Three, the PRICE! How can this good of a card be $85.

The only thing im worried about is the clock speed. It isn't even listed in the information. I'm sure it isnt that big of a deal.

Another card i came across that interested me is this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150157

Although it isn't from one of the more reputable companies, it seems to be a very decent card - it has 3 good reviews. It also has a little bit more power than the BFG card. The only thing i would worry about is my power supply. I'm not sure if its a 350W or a 400W.

Any advice is welcome on these two cards :D As you can gather from these two choices, i run on an AGP motherboard.

With your recent luck on Video Cards I would consider this one, with the rebate it's cheaper than the XFX but also a tad slower. They have the same number of pipelines etc... but the XFX you are looking at has been enhanced from the Nvidia 6800 XT specifications. EVGA primarily just uses reference board designs except on their Superclocked series. That means this is the design that Nvidia feels most comfortable with, including the clock speeds and memory configuration.

I know a lot of people who have this card and it's been able to push whatever they wanted, will be a big improvement over a 4600 or 4200 series. Most importatnly for you... it has a lifetime warranty :) Also, possibly good is the fact that they are doing away with the XT series so that if this breaks in 6 months you may get an upgrade for free! It's happened before.

Cheers!

I was able to pick up a 6600 card a couple months ago for under $100. It was infinitely better than my ti4600. I have yet to experience lag in any game I have played so far.

I've been using an XFX 6600GT for a good while now. No problems with it that I have noticed.

Lifetime warranties are hard to beat, but considering that I replace my vid card at times, a lifetime warranty isn't really a big selling point for me. As long as it has a 2-3 year warranty I am happy.
