Conroe on July 23rd?

Post by Sargeras »

With just over a month away from Intel releasing their new processor, is anyone looking forward to trying these out?

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/06/05/ ... _vs_fx-62/

Intel's 2.66ghz Conroe beating even an "overclocked" FX-62 processor... and the one that Tom tested wasn't even Intel's top-of-the-line Conroe core, nor was it the higher-end Extreme edition which supposedly will have clock speeds up to 3.2ghz.

Edit: Fixed link... sorry about that ><

It's about time Intel came out with some good chips again. They had a long dry spell where AMD was crushing them. Supposedly these run cool as well.

Nice to see AMD and Intel slugging it out again as it is with nVidia and ATi.

I'll probably be upgrading by the end of the year... Was considering AMD since I'm tired of how hot Intel runs. Will have to investigate to see what's what!

We expect both AMD and Intel to be ready with quad core products in 1Q2007, although Intel's approach does simply merge two Conroe-type dies into one package, so it's rather simple.
Ok.. Maybe by the end of 1Q2007! What's an extra 3 months.

Glad I waited awhile before upgrading to an x2. Will save a good amount. Enough to get 2 7900 series for SLI most likely.

AMD is planning major price cuts the day after Conroe is released:

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2800

Processor PIB 7/24

Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (socket AM2 only) $696 --> $403
Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (socket AM2 and 939) $558 --> $301
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (socket AM2 and 939) $365 --> $240
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (socket AM2 and 939) $303 --> $169

Intel finally releasing a competitive chip helps everyone. That's still 40 days away though!

Those are some nice price cuts...now I might have to rethink a new build I was planning out.
