Nokia (vodafone) 6680

Post by Funkmasterr »

I am having my cousin mail me two of these from japan after seeing his while he was back recently. We went in and talked to the people at T mobile and they said I just had to go to a nearby store and pay them 25 dollars to unlock the phones and they would work here just fine.

The problem I am having is this:
The phone uses a multimedia card. When we tried putting mp3's onto it (we ripped the files from a store bought cd and put them right onto the card) but when you go to play them (the phone uses real player) it gives me the error "unprotected file, cannot play".

My guess is that it is one of two things, either 1) its some kind of thing built into the phone to stop you from playing any files you dont pay to download through itunes or something. Or 2) I may need to use a different program or a format other than mp3..

If it is option 1 I am guessing there is some kind of a firmware hack (im kind of assuming that this is the problem) that I can get to bypass this issue.

I am just looking for recommendations and if it is a firmware hack i need i was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a good place to look.

Oh yeah, I also tried copying the files over from the card to the phones memory, there was enough free space to do it but it wouldnt let me.

Thanks.

Thank you for that link ashur.

I am trying to figure this out in somewhat of a hurry and haven't got an answer from those forums yet. Does anyone know of a forum like this that doesn't cater to people trying to get people to pay to have a phone unlocked (which is obscene).

I am not all that interested in paying someone 20 or 30 dollars to press a few buttons on my phone, thats just plain insulting. I also need to get this MP3 thing figured out for the phone.

Thanks in advance.

even if you don't want to pay someone the 25 bucks...you are most likely going to have a to order a particular interface cable which is going to run you 15 or so. It's not a matter of simply pressing a secret button sequence.

You might as well pay the 25 bucks.

Ok, point taken on the unlocking, I still need to figure the other thing out.

Someone on that site said something about trying it with the gallery application ? dont know where i can find it, but I don't quite have the phone yet and so I want a 100% for sure answer so im comfortable with it before it all goes through.

Thanks again

After trying everything I can come up with, I still haven't had any success. I even tried using a program called Exact Audio Copy that was all complicated to set up, and was supposed to create "true .mp3" format, and that didn't work.

Now my cousin has for some reason decided he thinks that the songs need to be in MIDI format to play on the phone, which doesn't make much sense to me, but at this point ill try anything.

So my question is this: Does anyone know of a program that I can rip from a cd to a midi file, or change a .mp3 into a midi file?

dear god funk. Mp3 to a midi file?

i think the only person that can help you at this point is the Video Professor

just pay to get your phone unlocked. eventually youre going to realize that getting a Fiddy-Cent ringtone for free is WAY over your head, man.

Ringtones are annoying anyway. I love hearing them go off all day in the office. Hello? You're at work! I doubt all those are emergency calls! Turn off your damn ringer and let them go to voicemail during the day.

Not sure how that relates but I just felt like sharing.

I'm not trying to get ringtones, I'm trying to get music files on the phone to listen to, but its being a pain in the ass... I think I made that pretty obvious in previous posts.
It's just at this point that I don't know what else to try, and even though I know that you would really only use midi on a phone for ringtones, I thought it was worth a shot since nothing else will work with the fucking.

I called nokia the other day, and the U.S. support couldn't help me. So then when I look for EU contact info, it is apparently too much for them to have a toll free number. So I emailed them, and they told me that if it was a Nokia, the phone is defective because it should play the files, but if it was a Vodafone(which it is) that I would have to contact them. Well, Vodafone doesnt have a toll free number or an email address ... wtf is up with Eurotrash not having toll free numbers or at least a damn email address for tech support?

Thank you for the link though... You know, my first thought a long time ago was that they want you to dl the damn songs, and I guess I was right. It is criminal to not be able to play cd's I bought because of some get money scam the cell phone companies are getting a chunk of.

I've got the 6682, not sure how close to the 6680 that is.. but it's relatively simple to do with the software and cable that comes with the phone.

If you're still having problems, take a gander at

It might be a bit easier to get support for a product in the country it's from.
