We Can Drill in the ANWR! No Problem!

Post by Arborealus »

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060302/sc_ ... a_spill_dc
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A leak from a feeder line carrying North Slope crude oil to the trans-Alaska pipeline caused a spill and triggered a shutdown of some activities at the biggest U.S. oil field, state and oil company officials said on Thursday.
My favourite mollifying quote:
The spilled oil appears to be contained on the snow-covered tundra, which should make it easier for crews to remove.
Whew, that's a relief...

I guess using the whole quote would have taken some of the drama away, right Arbor?
The spilled oil appears to be contained on the snow-covered tundra, which should make it easier for crews to remove, said Lynda Giguere, a spokeswoman for Alaska's environmental conservation department.

"Because it's cold, it's going to gel. That's the good news," said Giguere. "The other good news is we know how to pick that up."
Maybe you should panic for the whole board so we don't have to?

Is it me or is this a severely obnoxious pattern with liberals. Quote, write about, or talk about a story, but cut pieces of it to put their own pathetic bullshit spin on it ? Eh, I could be wrong.... but I doubt it.

Is it me, or is this a severely clueless pattern with the ... with Funk. Quote, write about, or talk about the story, but miss the fucking point completely.

Whether or not this particular spill is a catastrophe or not isn't really the issue; which would be if you can drill the ANWR without contamination as the oil companies pretend you can.

In fact, the part that was omitted was rather reduntant. The text paraphrased the quote that followed. A common journalist tactic to pad, spin or emphasise a point.

What's your next argument? "I know you are, but what am I?"

If you think you actually have a point, feel free to explain how what the journalist said is different to the verbatim quote that follows it. Else, fuck off back to your 5th grade class where you belong.

Although it is cold and it will gel this time it does prove a valid point: The oild industry does not put nearly enough time and money (which they surely have no lack off) into securing their systems to be allowed to drill there.

YOu know you might get away with calling this Liberal Bullshit Spin if you chose a different topic. Saying that in this case shows a lack of basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and common fucking sense.

a) Oil in a pipeline is not ambient temperature or the fucking stuff wouldn't move up there. It is HEATED probably in the neighbourhood of 100-120F at some points to ensure that it won't gel before it gets to the next heating station.

b) Hot liquid doesn't cool instantly. It won't cool for a while at a leak site with more hot liquid cascading onto it, so it will continue to melt snow and the frozen ground, making an oily mud on the surface.

c) Hot oil will do like any other hot liquid in snow and migrate UNDER it, as it is heavier/more dense, until it pools, cools and possibly "gels". There will be some associated melting above it but not always.

d) Depending on the stage of the process the oil has undergone, there may be volumes of salt water (formation water) in it. I'm assuming this will be low( > 0.5%) but salt water is a more dangerous contaminant and has a lower freezing point.

Some of the above is more readily apparent to me as someone who has worked in the Oil and Gas E&P industry, in similar climes, but a lot of that is common sense/elementary school sciences. But keep believing the spin from some talking head the oil company hired as they downplay the damage this does...

The topic at hand had little or nothing to do with what I said, I was merely stating a fact.

While it may be true that there is a valid point made in this topic, it doesn't mean the method I mentioned wasn't used. It is used in almost EVERY single thread in this forum where something that was written or said elsewhere is quoted.

It gets pretty damn boring watching the same people do that shit over and over and defend themselves to the bitter end like they are making a valid point, and I chose now to throw my two cents in about it.

I disagree in that I think that each topic deserves its own thoughts about the issue at hand. As far as "quotes out of context", politics is full of them from all sides and in this case, all Arb did was ignore some vapid garbage from a spin doctor trying to minimize this incident.

Ooooooh I was hiding the full quote cleverly by posting a link to the whole fucking article...aren't I devious!

I even included the point about it being easier to remove. How does the rest of the paragraph add significantly? The next sentence just elaborates details of the thought and contains zero revelation, hence I omitted it. Editing nonessential details is not bowdlerizing. Great it gels and we know how to remove that...so it is easier to remove which I included in my quote...

English motherfuckers can you read it?

I can, but you must not be able to.

I don't care the context it was in, fact of the matter is this specific topic may be far from the best example from these boards of what im talking about, but im sick and fucking tired of it happening. If you want to quote something, quote the entire thing, or don't do it at all, period.

Im sorry if im being a prick.

I just got off the phone with the most difficult man in the entire fucking universe.

The hardware we have is very sensitive as to upgrade processes. Something as minor as not pinging it at the correct time can fuck it all up and make you have to restart from the beginning.

This guy was blatantly ignoring half of what I said, resulting in the procdure taking almost 3 hours instead of the 20 minutes it should take. Now im going on lunch to get drunk, back in a bit.
