Hasidic Jewish Reggae singer. MTV2 has been jocking him for some time and I just recently gave him a closer listen and I really dig his music. It's reggae, so it's kind of happy in general and it's kind of nice that it has a positive spiritual message without being too preachy. It's not particularly groundbreaking music in any way (other than I haven't personally heard many hasidic musicians on MTV), but I like it.

I've had the Live at Stubbs cd going almost non-stop for a few weeks or so now. I also have tickets to go see him in March back at Stubbs again. This album was good, and I only skip two songs...well 1 1/2 songs. The band was pretty tight for a live set, and there might...might...have been one section that his voice was off a bit. It fit well with the point in the song though, which is why it's hard to really say that it was off.

When I was first given just the Hasidic Jew Reggae info, I was laughing. Then I heard King without a crown and had to stop what I was doing to listen all the way through.

I don't tend to listen to the majority of .. .. Well, not really roots raggae, but if you know raggae (and it sounds like you do) you know what I mean. I listen to dancehall mostly, but I do like a good handful of (older) raggae artists like Buju Banton, Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man (his older stuff wasnt as much dancehall as it is now), YellowMan, Sister Nancy, etc. SOOOO, it's possible I may like this.

Im going to give it a shot, mostly cause its pretty damn intriguing that its coming from a hasidic jewish guy. I'm sure he's not the first, but its the first time ive heard of it !

i saw this guy live before he was popular, i remember being very impressed (although that migh thave to do with there being the worst opening act ever)...some of his lyrics can be kinda lame but he does have a nice unique sound

his music is by no means roots reggae, it more closely resembles dancehall, but they do have their own style for sure

My girlfriend and I listened to this the other night. I think it sounded more like roots to me, the beats were very typical roots raggae beats, but then some of it sounded more dancehall too.

I didn't care for it. Not that im saying the guy isnt talented, but I tend to like listening to dancehall type stuff more, and the thicker the accent the better(being that my best friend and his whole family are from Jamaica and have thick accents, I had to get to know how to understand it.). In one of the songs you had up sylvus, he tried to sound jamaican, but I dont think he pulled it off that well.

It wasn't terrible though, id give him like a 6/10.

Many dancehall songs are the same beat they use over and over with different lyrics on top. Terrible lyrics at that. I used to like it because It was just a strong and simple beat to have in the background at parties etc..

But if you do listen to the lyrics you know these artists like Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Sizzla, and Capleton encourage killing white people and especially gay people. They have the most ignorant, violent, and dumb lyrics I've ever heard. Normally I wouldn't take it too seriously, but the fact is that hate crimes against gays are rampant over there and this makes it even worse.

Hateful lyrics are one thing, but hateful, uninspired and dowright moronic songs like these shouldn't be supported at all. If these lyrics were from one song it wouldn't be so bad, but these are from different songs and different artists. It is all the same retarded shit over and over.

Even without the hateful lyrics this genre of music is the most repetitive and unoriginal music I've ever heard. There is so much great music out there, don't waste your time on this crap.

Last year they had 1700 murders... outrageous for a country with only 2.5 million people.

As for lyrics inciting the murder of homosexuals... it's pretty rampant in dancehall music. Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel and TOK.

As far as I know, inciting murder is criminal offence. How would feel if American record companies distributed music that incited/encouraged people to commit terrorist acts against the US... to murder American tourists... etc.

I think you are missing the bigger picture though Miir. First off, most of these artists still live in Jamaica and their music is all made there, so our laws are meaningless if we allow the music to be imported.

And being gay is not acceptable in Jamaica. It's not just the musicians making this shit up on their own, its part of the culture and whether its a good thing or a bad thing is irrelevant.

This is a country where politicians pay street people to carry out their will. Lines are drawn down the middle of the street marking territories of certain politicians and if you arent a supporter of that person you will be shot dead without a question. In a place like that intolerance of homosexuality isnt so important.

Should not the people who distribute the music be held accountable?

Believe it or not (thats up to you and none of my concern) My best friend IS Jamaican. I also worked with and became good friends with a guy from jamaica who lived in Jamaica until he was 30. He has countless stories to tell on all different topics regaurding the country. I can assure you that the topic at hand was discussed at great length with all of them and the information I stated was verified.

But like I said, don't take my word for it. I'm sure that you guys, who probably know about Jamaica from what you read in the news, or the cruise you took there in the past, know more about the country and its culture than the 6-8 people I could reference on the subject.

First, if you live in Minnesota and have 6-8 Jamaicans that you personally know, doesn't it stand to reason that, say, anyone else in the fucking world has a decent chance of also knowing Jamaican people? For example, miir lives in Toronto, which is a bit more culturally diverse than Minnetonka.

Second, just because they are from Jamaica doesn't mean that they are representative of the entire population of Jamaica, and hearing things secondhand from them doesn't necessarily mean they're facts. What if you were friends with a racist family from Mississippi, would you take their word that there was something wrong with black people? Would you automatically assume that because they believed certain things that everyone else from Mississippi believed them too? One of my best friends' families is Christian and from Iraq, do you think they'd have the exact same worldview as say, a Shiite family from Iraq? I certainly don't, so I don't regurgitate things they say as facts about the entire population.

You speak to people who you really don't know, who have more age, life experince, and - quite obviously - intelligence (someone besides funkmasterr feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong) than you do like your word is law. No, that does not imply its ok, thats just the way you want to see it. If you took a close look at that sentence I wrote, you would probably see that I may not be real sensitive to gays, not that I condone them being killed for it. The issue I have is that we (the US) preach tolerance for so much shit, and expect the whole world to just see it the way we do, and thats just not the way it is and people need to deal with it.

I have a gay aunt, and one of my good friends from high school owns a gay club here called the gay 90s (well, his dad owns it). My girlfriend and I go there almost every saturday because we drink for next to free compared to other bars. If I get hit on there (which is rare because my girlfriend is almost always right there with me) I just let the person know im straight, and as long as they leave me alone then I've got no problem.

I don't have an issue with all gay people. What bothers me is the types that have to let everyone know they are gay, and talk like .. I dont know what, that lispy voice. Do I parade around telling everyone im straight? No, I dont because no one cares.

I live in Miami. Our Jamaican (and west indies) population is huge. I have worked with numerous amount of Jamaicans and have had countless Jamaican friends - none of which had even remotely similar views to the ignorant ones you mentioned your friends to have.

I don't think it's a cultural thing to be a hateful bigot. I think ignorance begets ignorance and because of your shallow-minded views, you attract people (of all different nationalities) with the same mind frame.

This must have been on one of the other boards you have gone to. I searched for that word and found that the majority of times it was used was either in reference to lyrics, calling someone a racist before they used the term, the history of the word and it's usage, and even referencing how television stations avoided black programming in the past! I did not see one hateful use. Then again, I skipped a few threads, so that must have been where it happened quite a few times.

Words are just sounds, it's the context that means anything. For someone who is "not real sensitive to gays" and doesn't "have an issue with all gay people" it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to defend yourself on this one.

Not to mention adding one of the afforementioned "kill the gays" lines to your signature. Oooh, you're so controversial! You made your avatar the cartoon that incited a virtual jihad and added a line about shooting people you "don't have a problem with" in your sig. You are also done with this argument (just like every other thread that you don't actually leave), you're "right" (even though you were actually worse than right. you were wrong.), and you don't care about anyone else's opinion. Add in the name-dropping and trying to one-up any story with a fabrication, and you've just about run every play in the attention seeker's playbook.

Believe it or not (thats up to you and none of my concern) My best friend IS Jamaican. I also worked with and became good friends with a guy from jamaica who lived in Jamaica until he was 30. He has countless stories to tell on all different topics regaurding the country. I can assure you that the topic at hand was discussed at great length with all of them and the information I stated was verified.

But like I said, don't take my word for it. I'm sure that you guys, who probably know about Jamaica from what you read in the news, or the cruise you took there in the past, know more about the country and its culture than the 6-8 people I could reference on the subject.

You really need to grow up a bit.

Just because you happen to know a few Jamaicans, it doesn't make you an expert on all things Jamaican. Shooting off your mouth about things of you obviously have limited knowledge makes your look stupid and immature.

Nobody is denying the fact that Jamaica has a culture of violence and intolerance towards homosexuals but it's nowhere near the 99.9% of the population that you claim has no issue with the murder of queers.

As you get older you'll start to realise that in order to have civil and mature discourse with others, you need to stop believing that 100% of what you say is the absolute truth.

And you didn't answer my question about where (if anywhere) you have been aside from Minnesota.
If you haven't travelled to any other countries or experienced other cultures, it would explain your ignorance and immaturity.

I know 99.9% is probably an exaggeration as I was trying to prove a point, but I still maintain it is the majority. I would probably give you 60-70% are along the lines of what I was saying and no less.

I've been through most of the US. I've lived in NYC and Chicago.
I've traveled extensively through Canada.. from the Yukon to Victoria to Cornerbrook. I've backpacked through Europe. I spent nearly a month in Australia and SE Asia.... also Egypt, Japan, Korea, nearly every country in the Caribbean and Central America (love Belize

).

I'm not saying any of that makes me any more of an authority of any of these topics but being exposed to so many different cultures has definately given me a broader outlook on things.

As for you... with never having traveled outside of the US and nothern Ontario/Manitoba, your ignorance of other cultures is both obvious and understandable.

Well stop spewing out horseshit on topics like you're an authority on the subject. Saying you have a Jamaican friend or friends doesn't give credence to your unbelievable bullshit. Just like being friends with someone who has a 'record label' doesn't make you an authority on rap music.

I have been to jamaica and the vast majority of caribbean countries throughout my life and have and have had several Caribbean friends in college, I have never seen nor have ever had anything mentioned to me about a hatred towards gays
