Daily Show Excerpt from Last Night re: Abramoff Scandal

Post by noel »

I just found this hilarious and totally sad all at the same time. Much <3 for the Daily Show.
Stewart: "Representative Pelosi, here's your chance to finally take this reform effort past the area of 'cheap stunt'."

Cut to - Representative Nancy Pelosi (D)
Pelosi (beaming a smile to assembled crowd at 'Honest Leadership Open Government' [assembly?]) "And now we're going to sign the 'Declaration of Honest Leadership'"

Cut to Stewart
Stewart - Yes we're going to sign the 'Declaration of Honest Leadership'. Apparently that 'Oath of Office' thing didn't take!
There were apparently a lot of Democrats at this assembly which led Stewart to comment that it wasn't like they were needed for the business of running the government.

Best part about the Daily Show is how they manage to blast both parties. The new Speaker of the House Rep. Dennis Hastert (R) was shown in an interview saying that they needed to quickly work to reform the rules on privately sponsored travel and the gift rules.
Stewart Commented using the Speaker's voice: "As far as I know... Those are the only two things we got caught doing... So I'm going to say... I'm going to say that's our plan right there."
It's so fucking sad that I have to sit here wondering if we'll ever have a government free of this stupidity that actually does their fucking job.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

It hasn't happened in the last 230 years, I don't expect things to change anytime soon. As long as the mechanisms are in place to minimize the damage and catch the worst offenders every once in a while we'll be OK.

Unfortunatley for us, they are trying rather TOO hard to remove those mechanisms.

The dems are a bunch of spinless weasels and bleeding vaginas, while the GOP is a haven for small-minded bigots and jingoistic whackjobs. Truly, the 2 party system is working for the people!

I think somebody said like 2000 years ago that those who most desire power are those least suited to wield it. Still true today, yet we have a government and political system designed to ONLY allow those kind in.

Mencken and O'Rourke said it better than I, so I'll just quote them.
The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."
- H. L. Mencken
Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.
- P. J. O'Rourke
No nation was ever ruined by trade.

– Benjamin Franklin
