Wilma fucked us up
The island of Key West was flooded, not from the storm surge when the hurricane hit, but by a tidal surge that came in after it had already passed. There was 5.5 feet of water going down the street I live. My place took in 4 feet of it. It was so strong in some places that cars were floating down streets.
People who have lived here for 95 years had never seen such a thing. Good thing that the city has been upgrading our sewer system with gravity injection wells for the past couple years, so the water was gone by noon that day.
With the help of my nephew, who slaved with me for 4 days after the flood, I was able to save my clothes, CDs, DVDs, and some personal effects, but all my computers, stereo, TVs, bed, and all my furniture were destroyed. I owe that kid more than I can express.
Estimates are saying that around 75-80% of all keys residents lost their vehicles, including me. I only had PIP, so I'm definitely fucked there. I already know that I make too much money for FEMA to give me a damn thing, so I'm hoping that the flood insurance on the house had coverage for contents.
Thankfully, nobody I know was seriously hurt or killed, and the power was back on to pretty much everyone 2 days afterwards. My parent's house was high enough off the ground so that it didn't take in water, and they've been really awesome about this whole thing, even letting me use one of their vehicles to drive to work, which is where I'm writing this from.
Here's a link to the local paper's coverage with some pretty amazing pictures: http://www.keysnews.com/hurricaneedition/

i think FEMA gives $ independent of income.
i made a FEMA claim in 1997, but i was dirt poor (grad school) then, but i think they used a formula based on the property value of the residence, and whether i rented/owned to calculate reimbursement.
Meaning if i lived in a nicer place and owned it, i would have gotten more money.
good luck. at least you got the personal effects.
that was the stuff i lost in 1997. I evacuated with stereo, guitars, etc. i lost the stuff i couldn't replace.
winnow, i'm not sure they write flood insurance for people who live on islands 5 feet above sea level

FEMA was good with the short term money after Katrina. All my friends had their checks within two weeks (they applied via internet). The short term money is independent of income.
I'm not certain they applied for further assistance but that process seemed well executed, so hopefully that bodes well for you to some extent...
Let us know if we can help somehow

I couldn't even trade his ass for 2 packs of smokes, much less booze. He's not worth shipping costs

Living with my parents (and having to bum their rides) is as asstastic as I remembered, and not having broadband or even a real computer is the complete opposite of fun.
I can only hope that fucking FEMA approves me for a big loan, as I've officially been denied the free money because I didn't own the place I was living. I'm getting dick from the people who own the place because they are didn't have content coverage on their flood insurance. So far I've qualified for 2 aid programs: I got $360 from the Red Cross, and the state is sending me $152 in food stamps.
