Help...parental control

Post by Sendarie »

Because of some hellish hours for operation noble eagle we were authorized and had the DVD software on our PC's installed.

Program is Power DVD.

For some reason on my PC the parental control is set to not allow me to watch anything over rating of "G".
Obviously this makes watching season 2 of Family Guy...difficult.

Its requesting a password but noone ever set a password for it.

Any of you computer geniuses know how to disable or get past this? Is their a default password?

I think I've found it however it involves messing with the registry.

I can't be responsible for anything you do to your computer while messing in the registry.

1 - Close Power DVD
2 - I went to the following key(I run PowerDVD 5)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CyberLink\PowerDVD\Users
and deleted all the user entries under it.
3 - Open PowerDVD and you should have unlimited access to play movies.

Again things might be different with whichever version you are using on your computer.

That was the first thing I tried unfortunatley there is no such path on mine in the registry.
I have:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CyberLink\PowerDVD\

But no "Users". There is a long list of reg strings in there but nothing I can decipher as being related to the Parental Control.
Its weird none of the other computers are having this problem.

Are you able to install any other player because from what I've seen, at least the 5 minutes I had it installed, is that PowerDVD is crappy.

Yah about 50 or so registry entires. Most of which start with "UI" so I'm assuming its something to do with the user interface.
Nothing that even remotely resembles password or user or parental control.

Zoomplayer Professional

http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml

is the best DVD player for tech HTPC geeks.

If you don't wish to fiddle around with a ton of settings though, I'd try something like TheaterTek.

http://www.theatertek.com/

It includes the NVIDIA decoders (NVDVD4) which are the best out right now. It's a little pricy though so I'd get it from NewsApps(tm).

There are free DVD players out there. Just go get Media Player Classic:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... lassic.cfm

It has an extremely basic UI and has a built in DVD player. It's free. Even recently, I've run into video files that won't play on Zoomplayer for some reason but Media Classic tears them up.

It goes without saying that you should get Real Alternative

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... native.cfm

and Quicktime Alternative

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... native.cfm

codecs so you don't have to install the bloated piece of crap Real Audio Player and Quicktime Players no matter what video player you use.

If you're missing a video or audio codec, this page is a good one to find what you need:
