WASHINGTON — Cindy Sheehan (search), the California woman who became a leader of the anti-war movement following her son's death in Iraq, was arrested Monday along with dozens of others protesting outside the White House.
Sheehan, carrying a photo of her son in his Army uniform, was among hundreds of protesters who marched around the White House and then down the two-block pedestrian walkway on Pennsylvania Avenue. When they reached the front of the White House, dozens sat down -- knowing they would be arrested -- and began singing and chanting "Stop the war now!"
Police warned them three times that they were breaking the law by failing to move along, then began making arrests. One man climbed over the White House fence and was quickly subdued by Secret Service agents.
Sheehan, 48, was the first taken into custody. She smiled as she was carried to the curb, then stood up and walked to a police vehicle while protesters chanted, "The whole world is watching."
About 50 people were arrested in the first hour, with dozens of others waiting to be taken away. All cooperated with police.
Sheehan was among several hundred demonstrators who marched around the White House on Monday and then stopped in front and began singing and chanting "Stop the war now!"
The demonstration is part of a broader anti-war effort on Capitol Hill organized by United for Peace and Justice, an umbrella group. Representatives from anti-war groups were meeting Monday with members of Congress to urge them to work to end the war and bring home the troops.
The protest following a massive demonstration Saturday on the National Mall that drew a crowd of 100,000 or more, the largest such gathering in the capital since the war began in March 2003.
On Sunday, a rally supporting the war drew roughly 500 participants. Speakers included veterans of World War II and the war in Iraq, as well as family members of soldiers killed in Iraq.
"I would like to say to Cindy Sheehan and her supporters don't be a group of unthinking lemmings. It's not pretty," said Mitzy Kenny (search) of Ridgeley, W.Va., whose husband died in Iraq last year. The anti-war demonstrations "can affect the war in a really negative way. It gives the enemy hope."

I remember reading that article and thinking "good, what an idiot, those protestors are nutjobs." Then I got to the end and read that quote that you bolded and thought "god, what an idiot, those counter-protestors are nutjobs." Neither side is arguing for any sort of sensible or coherent policy. It's a mockery of political participation.

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all. - Douglas Adams
I would be ashamed if I had died in combat and my mother had done this type of thing.

Hey Noel, I even agree with Kyoukan some times, there are such things as near universal truths.

I thought you neocons always said not to blame the military but the leaders? Now when the other side of the coin is up you are saying that people shouldn't join the military?
If you're so gung ho about dying in Iraq then maybe you should fucking enlist. This woman's son dies for a worthless cause (unless you are one of Cheney's friends) and you have nothing but hatred for her.

I think you are missing the whole point...
Most of my uncles fought in WWII, many of my friends Dads fought in Korea and I have numerous friends today who fought in the First Gulf War... this war like Nam, is bullshit. Hell at least in Nam there might have actually been a reason initially... for this there was nothing but lies.
While I will probably steer my sons away from the military, not because I don't want them defending the country, that is something every soldier should be very proud of doing, but because I don't want them to risk death for some morons greed or stupidty. This war has NOTHING to do with defending America, that is what her son signed up to do... that is not why he died.

People join the military to defend their country, not to attack others based on lies and false evidence. That is simple enough for even an American to understand. I don't normally expect a citizen of a country who are generally a bunch of loud mouthed, militaristic cowards to comprehend anything like that.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:If you do not want to be sent to another country and take a large risk in dying, then don't sign up for the military. I am proud of my country's military history. When other countries see the Canadian flag they know it stands for freedom and democracy. When they see the US one they are probably about to get fucking bombed or shot by some fucking 18 year old thug.

Bullshit. The US military does not defend the US. It defends everyone fucking else. Every time someone needs help do they call Canada? Fuck no. When troops are required for anything, be it Somalia, Kuwait, Grenada, etc, it is the US who ponies up all the combat troops. If you are too stupid to know this when you sign up, then you deserve to be surprised when you get shipped overseas.
Protect their country when they sign up? Please. The only way to attack the US with troops is through Canada and Mexico. Both of those 3rd world countries know what would happen if they allowed troops to stage there to attack the US.

The mother is the one protesting. I'm pretty sure she didn't enlist. So your whole post is basically irrelevant. That has nothing to do with someone protesting a war they feel is wrong.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:If you do not want to be sent to another country and take a large risk in dying, then don't sign up for the military. And I seriously doubt she did any of this to get "15 minutes on TV". That's some delusional logic.
Oh and Fash you have some real anger issues. Surprised you haven't gone Rambo and slit her throat yet.

Well, right wing media have been hammering on this woman and trying to make it look like she has alterior motives...And I seriously doubt she did any of this to get "15 minutes on TV". That's some delusional logic.
If anyone thinks 'fame' is her motivation, they gotta be pretty fucked in the head.

Ok, well even though I hada jolly interesting little battle with Kyoukan and she apparantly puts me in the Midnyte camp of retards (for which she can go fuck herself) the following post is complete gold.

She did nothing more than raise future cannon fodder and some of you morons seem to think that makes her someone to listen to, that kills me.
If she was so antiwar she would have impressed that issue on her children, if she failed to instill her core values in the next generation than perhaps she should have worked harder at being a parent. Her white uppermiddle class son felt he had no other options but to joint he military, and almost everyone I ever met in the Army with that background was trying to get the hell away from their parents. But regardless she is using the death of her son as a political tool, and she should be fucking ashamed, ask if she worked against the war before HER son was there, ask if she worked against the war before HER son died in it.
Do not mistake her guilt with any type of moral high ground. Her son made the ultimate sacrifice for his beliefs and she makes a lie of them each day.
By the way there have been protesters against the war in DC for years, why is it news when she gets there?

I don't know about you, but if I were Bush, I would have made real fucking sure no one fucking went near this woman, let alone arrested her mid protest. His fuckups over the hurricanes had finally got her out of the public eye and then this shit happens? Keith Oberman said it best when he said "Bush should have told the chief of police: Don't touch her even if she bursts into flame." Now the right wing spin machine has to divide its talking points between shit slinging her and damage control from the katrina debacle. Hardly an ideal situation for them.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
Dwight Eisenhower
