"Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them," Mrs. Bush told American Public Media's "Marketplace" program, before returning to her multi-million dollar Houston home.

Drawing an obvious conclusion isn't really spinning this story.Dregor Thule wrote:Yeah, I'm sure she's about as in touch with the people of America as she is in touch with the people of Latvia, wasn't really the point. It would be far more biased if it read thusly:
Barbara Bush as part of a group in Houston today at the
Astrodome that included her husband and former
President Bill Clinton, who were chosen by her son,
the current president, to head fundraising efforts for
the recovery. Sen. Hilary Clinton and Sen. Barack
Obama were also present.
Mrs Bush expressed that the evacuees are enjoying
the Texas hospitality and are happy to stay there.
She said the rescue efforts are "working very well
for them".

I assume she is referring to the underprivelged getting goverment aid and starting over in a new city. In some ways, its a good deal for the evacuees.

Actually most of the evacuees now camped out in houston and other places would have voted democrat. African American's in the south have a stauch party line to vote democrat. That has started to change some, but not by a large margin. I don't know if the republican party will ever be forgiven for its stance on civil rights in the 50's and 60's.There's a reason why people don't understand why the poor vote for the imperials ...

I'll grant you the first article is vitriolic w/ the references to Marie Antoinette, but it's not even really "spin"; there's interpretation but it doesn't change what she said and the implications are pretty obvious.

That's laughable the first article is full politcal rheotric. Thats not even a arguable point.
With comments like "Finally, we have discovered the roots of George W. Bush's "compassionate conservatism."" and "Even when a hurricane hits, the apple does not fall far from the tree." Which goes beyond reporting this story and implying GW is to blame for the lack of response in ther aftermath of Katrina because he doesn't like poor people.
The conclusion of the article must be obvious only in your mind. I didn't draw the same thing out of the article other then the author needed to stop writing his articles right after watching the Daily Show. (Disclaimer I love the show, but I consider it as baised as this article)

I'll argue against that (the Daily Show point). Yes, it's definitely a Liberal-sided show, but they will make fun of everyone and anyone, be they on the left, the right, black, white, christian, jew or muslim; if you made the news, you're fair game. To compare it to this article is kind of insulting!

OK seriously, what difference does it make what Barbara Bush says? Her husband isn't sitting in the Whitehouse, her son is. A son that can't be re-elected, even if people wanted to hold him in any way accountable for words out of his mother's mouth. And does anyone seriously believe comments like this would even hurt Jeb's electabilty if he decides to run in the future?
I'm not a fan of G.W. Bush, but what some insensitive, old hag says really affects nothing, even if she is his mother.

You are downplaying the seriousness and impact of her statement. First of all, she's not just some "old hag". She's a former First Lady of the United States of America. Secondly, she is the mother of the current President of the United States of America. Family values anyone? The reason people are talking about it is because, yes, it is important. Her words can/do still have an impact.
She doesn't set policy. Any family values are already instilled in Georgie Jr. and aren't changing. Realistically she's an old, rich, white person insensitive in large part to the catastrophe that befell a lot of people. She's entitled to her opinion, but how does that make newsworthy or important?Fairweather Pure wrote:You are downplaying the seriousness and impact of her statement. I won't downplay the monumental idiocy of the statement, but I will agree that people are giving her way too much credit as a signifigant public figure. Relax. People say dumb shit on television all the time. That's usually why we watch it in the first place.

I think the worry is this. Even tho she's not an elected official by any means, she still is part of the team. Both her and Bush Sr. will voice "opinions" that have been defined by GWBs team to help with the overall gameplan. So, despite the fact she wasn't reciting a speech, she may have been given some points to bring up should questions arise. Was this one way they were trying to downplay the situation?

What I object to is you abusing me for your failure to comprehend english, idiot. I can bring any word I like into a discussion, it's your problem if you don't understand the word or the post in general.
Your apparent issue is that because I said the article wasn't spinning what Barbara said, you believe I said the article was not biased.
