My conspiracy theory is that due to Bush invading Iraq oil prices are so high that these backwater airlines not only can't afford to service their planes, they now can't afford to fill them up either!

So you see, it is all Bush' fault!

I think the reason some people fear the mass-transit accidents are that they do not have any control. The way I look at it is that if I go down in a plane the chance of suffering long-term is less than in a car accident.

You don't have a lot of control when that semi jumps the barrier and hits you head on at 70mph. So I think it's just the perception of control that people like. That 104 that died in that boat is about the same number that die in traffic accidents every single day in the U.S.

I somewhat disagree. If you are an alert driver you would see that truck coming and at least have a chance, although minor, of swerving or avoiding the accident. Plus you have more options when you are driving such as speed and direction, choice of lane and such like that. In a plane you can pretty much count on yer ass being fried in a crash (noted exception being that crash in Canada).

Well, knowing what is coming after you finish that seven-mile fall would not make the fall any easier, but what could you do about it? The majority of the time, you will be gone after the crash. Now the fear during those minutes would be real, but what would you do if you flipped your car on some mountain highway which had little traffic other than live there in pain until someone happened by to help you?

Personally, anything involving other drivers on the road sometimes scares the shit out of me. This is especially true here in Austin!

I have to agree w/ Bubba on this. If you drive enough, you learn to anticipate moronic behavior. There are accidents that aren't deemed your fault because the other person was sleeping/stupid/aggressive/etc but occur because you don't double check side to side/look in your rearview mirror for someone bearing down/ leaving an out for yourself in case someone stupid/etc. It's not even being overly cautious either, it's just being able to pick up on someone else's stupidity before they act on it.

Gotta be a defensive driver except when merging...need to hold your ground against the merge cutters! (stupid fucks that cause everyone to be delayed due to their inability to merge at the right point)

Although I've flown a bazillion miles using commercial airlines, It's a toss up betweening feeling more comfortable locked in a jail cell with Mombo or as a passenger on a plane.

You're at the mercy of the pilot, maintenance crew, air traffic control, weather, psychos, your bladder, breathing recycled air with people coughing and hacking, delays, knees jammed into the seat in front of you...more to come.

My flight to Las Vegas last December required three passes with the pilot gunning the jets at the last minute to pull up and swing around for another attempt before we landed in a monsoon with lighting, raining, windy turbulent conditions. Fuck that. We had no say in whether we should divert to another airport or not. One more missed landing attempt and we would have flown all the way back to Phoenix.

Hehehe best flight ever I'm up by the cockpit and the cockpit door is open as we glide into MLU...I hear the pilot say loudly "Ooops" and gun the hell out of the engines...Ooops is not what ya want to hear when the wheels are just hitting...

Yeah, I had something similar happen in an ice storm in southwest Kansas in a small dual-prop commuter. I swear we slid the last few hundred feet on landing.

OTOH, apart from ultra-light aircraft and the occasionally trainee in a focker, pretty much everyone you're flying with has extensive training to be there. I'll take my chances in the air versus the galloping fucktards that are allowed drivers licences any day of the week.

Trouble is, and think of your own experience here, you only have basic driving skills at best when you're let loose on your own on the road, you really learn to drive well in the next few years after that; a lot of people never seem to improve. They should retest everyone, on a much tougher standard, after a couple years and just cancel their licences if they haven't worked it out by then.

From what I have read it is too early to tell for certain about any of these. Looks like the Air France landing should have been a touch and go though. The Greece crash they simply don't know yet as the facts are very confusing. Same with the South American crash.
