if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

nice...so every 2000 days we will save one day worth of oil?...unless i'm being mathtarded"The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use," said Markey, who cited Transportation Department estimates that showed the two-month extension would save the equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil a day.
The country uses about 20 million barrels of oil a day.
I think they should do away with daylight savings time all altogether. It serves no useful purpose these days other than to give people an excuse for being late to work once a year. A large part of these 'energy costs' consist of fuel for vehicles. They will consume the same amount in the daylight as they would in the evening.
Indiana doesn't observe DST. Well.. Most of it anyway. They are currently trying to pass something that will change that. So lame.
Basically it's (this current thing to extend DST) just a diversion imo. Give people something meaningless to debate to get their mind off other things.

Yes. Because lightbulbs are the real problem. Pay no attention to the auto industry, america! Your government has discovered that the real gas guzzlers are your 60 watts!
Not good, congress, I give this misdirection a C. Although you get a B+ for having the balls to target something so mind-bendingly stupid.

All of Arizona doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time except for a few Indian Reservations so individual states can ignore whatever the Federal Government is cooking up if they wish.Aslanna wrote: Indiana doesn't observe DST. As for light. White LEDs used for house and office lighting should take care of that problem. Much cheaper and they last forever. 10 X's less energy and last 10 Xs longer.

So them doing something that gives you more daylight to do things when you are off work AND it saves some of the earth's resources is a bad thing? You sound like a bunch of whining retards. And all it takes for them to do it is to pass a resolution on TOP of the energy bills they are working on......where is the downside to this you fucking crybabies?

From Wikipedia:
I don't like it because it throws my internal clock off for weeks, but it is a good idea. One of the major reasons given for observing DST in the United States is energy conservation. Theoretically, the amount of residential electricity needed in the evening hours is dependent both on when the sun sets and when people go to bed. Because people tend to observe the same bedtime year-round, by artificially moving sunset one hour later, the amount of energy used is theoretically reduced. United States Department of Transportation studies showed that DST reduces the country's electricity usage by one percent during each day DST is in effect.
...
When the U.S. went on extended DST in 1974 and 1975 in response to the 1973 energy crisis, Department of Transportation studies found that observing DST in March and April saved 10,000 barrels of oil a day, and prevented about 2,000 traffic injuries and 50 fatalities saving about U.S. $28 million in traffic costs. i love it.
i work until 6 most days, so in the winter, i hate leaving work and the sun is down. the more days i have with some daylight to get stuff done in the yard or go for a walk with my daughter the better in my opinion.
it is more daylight during the period of the day that i have for my own things. i give a shit if the sun is shining while i'm trapped in my cube, but when i'm turned loose, i care. i'm with Kilmoll.

I side with Voro and Kilm.
There is no downside to this proposal. More after-wrk daylight is a good thing.
As vor mentioned, driving home after work at 6:00 in the dark is depressing as hell. Winter is ass. Drive to work in the dark. Drive home from work in the dark. The only sunlight I see in the those dark months is on the weekends. Give me at least an hour of light at night and Ill be singing happily.
Go go Congress!

This is going to help you in the winter... How?Lawmakers crafting energy legislation approved an amendment Wednesday to extend daylight-saving time by two months, having it start on the first Sunday in March and end on the last Sunday in November.
People who support Daylight Savings Time probably also think Global Warming is a good thing because they get cold in the winter.

You do realize that it is the use of electricity to light homes and run devices in the home that is what this basically targets right? An hour a day you don't need to have lights on in every house saves a lot of electricity. You do know that electricity doesn't just miraculously happen to stream into homes.
That does make sense. You realize that living in the south already gives you more daylight in the winter than most of the U.S.! : )Voronwë wrote:i love it.

I agree that having daylight when it's your own personal time is important. It sucks going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark but think of the canadians! They probably do that the entire winter, not to mention the Scandinavians.
There's been talk of a 24 hour stock market for several years. The world needs to move away from the 9-5 business hours and adjust to the global community.

We're supposed to be in an ice age cycle right now, but 5000 years of increasing agriculture have kept it at bay...Aslanna wrote:People who support Daylight Savings Time probably also think Global Warming is a good thing because they get cold in the winter.
As looney as analysts and traders get now, they'd die within years of the US going to a 24 hour market. They'd have to do something like they do with air traffic controllers, mandatory early retirements and such.
"Life is what happens while you're making plans for later."
I'm not against saving energy.. I just don't like daylight savings time. You're messing with the natural order of things! If something like this passed it wouldn't be the end of the world or anything.
But again, this doesn't help you at all in winter since it would end the last weekend of November. You're still going to be waking up when it's dark and driving home when it's dark as you are now. Why not just implement a permanent change and be done with it instead of this 6-8 month crap.
I also think people could save a lot more energy if they practiced conservation. Do you really need every single light on in the house? I'm going to guess, no, probably not.

Thats the same reason I love it too. I hate leaving work and having it seem like I just got back from a movie and evertything outside is pitch black.Voronwë wrote:i love it.

Returning the clock is even better. I feel that I have more energy (and feel great) when the sun is still out at 7-8 o'clock.

Looks like this bill passed. I think it just needs to get signed by the prez:
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst ... ght20.html
This will extend DST from the first Sunday of March to the last Sunday of November. The thing that concerns me is that according to the article, they want to start doing this this year. That seems rediculous to do since everyone has a calendar on their desk saying that DST ends on October 30th this year. Not to mention that it only gives companies four months to update their software to reflect the change as well. Most operating systems automatically adjust for DST, and I know transaction based businesses like banks, cell phone companies, etc. need to have special procedures for when the DST switch occurs as well.

Its funny because now the question up here is "if the US does it, will we do it to?" and you have theories of chaos in the transportation industries, etc.
To me, its all bullshit. I grew up in an area where the sunrise and set variations are much more extreme than most of you experience(d), and it doesn't make any sense to me. The time doesn't make a difference. Energy usage is related to lifestyle habbits, and this theory that we'll use less energy at night is neglecting that we will increase our usage in arguably the most instense parts of the day from energy usage (just think about how much shit you use/do in the morning as you get ready for work/school vs what is done when you get home at night). Changing your personal routine can have more of an impact than this would. Businesses can change their hrs to suit their needs if daylight actually has that large an impact on them.
People getting up 30-60 min earlier so their hair dries naturally as opposed to blow drying would make more of a difference than this crap.

Just read this article...guess the DST extension is not going to be as big as originally expected.

Can a farmer explain to me how DST affects livestock? I'm honestly confused about this...not just trying to make a snide comment.According to some senators, farmers complained that a two-month extension could adversely affect livestock

Not a farmer or anything, but my take is that they milk cows at sunrise (5am). With DST they would have to get up at 4am to milk the cows but the cows are still asleep. They could get up an hour later but that means they have less time and less milk to sell to the delivery guys since they work with the DST.XunilTlatoani wrote:Can a farmer explain to me how DST affects livestock? Try getting up 1 hour early everyday and tell my that doesnt fuck you up. And before you say you would just go to bed earlier, remember that cows are stupid and don't know what time they go to bed.
