More religion in public schools

Post by Homercles »

Only this time I can accept this class. Id even encourage my child to take it as an elective.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/04/27 ... index.html
the class should be added to the curriculum in fall 2006 and taught as a history or literature course
Sure, it may be a backdoor to get the bible into schools, but the Bible is a literary constant with a lot of historical reference and value. Better understanding of the bible = better understanding of the history of the Middle East. And a better understanding of the Christian culture.

Of course, I would also push to include the Quran and the major documents of the Buddhists religion as well as the Jewish and Hindu religions.

History of religion classes are extremely useful.

If its an elective, then I see nothing wrong with this. I agree with Homer in that seeing other religions added to it would be a nice balance but its still a student's choice (and their parents') whether to take this course or another in its place.

My wife and I both took similar courses in College, I think it would be great to teach it in HS as an elective, that's not forcing anyone.

Yeah, the class's idea is a great one. As was said, understanding of the literary and cultural aspects of the Bible are important to comprehending much of modern literature. But, like everything, success/failure would be in the execution of the class.

As long as such a class does not become a means for proselytizing, its ok. Also, its a high school course, which means that it probably shouldn't go deeply into the Bible alone, but instead ne a cursory examination of the Bible and other religious documents in the same context (Koran, etc.).

Oh well, who am I kidding... folks will undoubtably use it as a bible thumping class to proselytize their interpretation of the Bible to kids who think the same way they do. Fire and brimstone and all that shit. GAYS ARE THE DEBIL!!!!

In high school I had a full year of Humanities which covered the various religions and philosophies historically and currently.

Don't high schools teach this stufff anymore?

I don't see a need for a bible class although it's an elective and easily avoided while the Humanities was manditory in my school. As long as the instuctor isn't biased, it should be an enlighteing class for anyone.

Amazing a story like this is considered newsworthy. Evidence of the ACLU's effectiveness. I hear Michael Savage claiming the use of RICO Statutes could slow down the ACLU.

Yeah... let people actually understand why it is apparently against gays. Hint... its against all promiscuous, extramarital sex, which homosexuals were a big part of at the time of its writing.

In college, I had an ancient history course that looked at a few things from the Bible from a historical viewpoint. I found it interesting in that regard, especially since many of the stories have been shown to be wrong.
