I'm going to let everyone mourn for a few hours and then post odds for the top five candidates to be the next pope.

Are we stuck with Pope John Paul III or will they be a little more original this time around?

The Vatican has made it clear that John Paul III will not be an acceptable name for the next pope, and that tradition will be followed once again for the naming of the new pope.

...the formal determination of the death of the reigning Pope; the traditional procedure for this was to strike gently the Pope's head three times with a silver hammer and to call his name.

Man, do they have a commitee sitting around somewhere coming up with all of these rituals?

well this isn't exactly the first time a pope has died =). its a very old religion (~1600 yrs), and it is extremely large too (~1 billion catholics), so ritual is not only an important part of the organization's history, but functions also to signify to the massive flock of followers the magnitude of the Papacy.

i'm not a Christian at all, but for the many flaws of the Catholic church, there are some things that it offers that I can respect a great deal. I think its history and clear lineage to the origins of Christianity are assets. It has promoted academic analysis of Christianity in greater depth than any other religion has ever scrutinized itself.

It wouldnt be my first choice, but i would become a catholic long before i would go to one of these "stadium" style churches you see in the suburbs now, where you can sit with 10,000 of your 'closest friends'. i have a friend who goes to a church where they watch the pastor on a big projection screen. he's not even there....huh?!

anyway i digress!

John Paul II was a great man, whether or not you are a follower of his religion.

As Popes go, and I only know this one as he was Popified in 1978, he was a good one.

BTW, the Roman Catholics must be loving this opportunity to get a few converts. It's been so long since the last pope election hoopla that they have a chance for all sorts of air time.

They should have "Cardinal Cam" and have one of the Cardinals voting with a camera attached to their hat. Maybe change the election process so that after they narrow it to the final five candidates, have some sort of Survivor competition to select the final one. The Cardinal that blesses the most babies in a 24 hour period gets immunity the next day.

That doesn't really mean anything, religion has always had ups and downs throughout history. Of course major events influence this as well, an example being WWI, before then religion was somewhat decaying, afterwards it rebounded (pretty obvious reason for that though).

Rest in peace Pope John Paul The Great

Overheard somewhere that Pope John Paul II would be named a Saint. No idea on the validity of the statement though.

That's a bad sign for religious people. It makes those old "superhuman" saints of the past look pretty ordinary eh? The biggest thing believers get caught up in is overhyped events from the past that really are just normal people like Pope John Paul II.

Not special but nice people.

This post is being made strictly because having exactly 666 VVs is starting to creep me out, and i figured a pope thread was as good a place as any to put an end to the number of the beast.

that and of course theres the science factor, we kind of disproved that the earth is the center of the universe and a dude named appollo pulls around the sun on a charriot, or that the earth is 5000 years old and was entirely populated by 2 humans directly made by god named adam and eve

You're right, I forgot that Christianity follows Greek Mythology, thanks for the correction. You know that people like Galileo and Copernicus made their discoveries in the 1500-1600s... Right? Why hasn't religion been dead since? Stop being a smartass, you make yourself look dumber than normal

religion is not the problem. people who do not follow their own religion are the problem.

actually the second part of my statement referring to evolution wasnt accepted until recently, and still isnt by several un educated people and conservative government officials...and since the 1500s religion has gradually been in decline, maybe not steadily but ever since the dark ages and before that time period established religion has been on a continuous long term decline
