Senile PS2 (DRE) Nightmare

Post by Farrel »

I ran a search here and couldnt find any threads related to the DRE (disc reading error) problems so many older PS2s seem to have.
Ive googled-up a couple of guides to fixing the problem internally but adjusting the voltage to the lens and adjusting the height gear havent worked so far. any suggestions (besides throw it out the window and/or for X2/PS3)?

Is it making a large grinding sound or seems to be 'catching' on the disks you're playing?

Do your games stutter or just not play?

i know of nothing that could be done if it's hit or miss like that..

I called Sony after the first PS2 I bought had similiar issues. I mentioned to them that I read all the articles and on-line petitions against them, but I would rather deal directly with them regarding my out of warranty unit. They fixed it for free. The laser was not lining up correctly according to the paperwork. That was well over a year ago and it has worked perfect since. You can try Sony, act rational and explain you have read about the issues and see it they will help you like they did me.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

akaran - they just wont load/play at all.

fash - my roomate took a game (ace combat 5) back to eB because it didnt load...we were sure the game (not the console) was bugged...oops

tyek - I read about those petitions and parties who claimed to file lawsuits against them since the problem is so common. eventually they said they'd fix it for free if you havent tried to fix it yourself, but Ill take your advice and give them a call anyway. I guess another month without the ps2 is well worth not having to deal with this ever again.

thanks for the feedback so far guys 8)
