NBA All Star Weekend

Post by Winnow »

Woo. All five Suns will attend the All-Star weekend festivities.

Selected by coaches for the Western Conference All Star team:

1.Amare
2.Nash
3.Marion

Participating in the Three Point Shootout:

4.Joe Johnson
5.Q-Rich

Participating in the Slam Dunk contest:

Amare

It's more of an honor to be selected by the coaches than by the fans IMO as most fans tend to be clueless.

I'm glad Marion got in. Amare should do well in the slam dunk contest. He says he's doing it because people say big men don't have style. hehe.

it was interesting a couple years ago when the All Star game was in the ATL.

my personal highlight was trying to get through to the bar at the slammed Houston's we were trying to eat at, and this voluptuos sister was sitting on the bar proclaiming "I gots to air my pussy out"

that should provide laughter to me for a lifetime.

I just don't understand how Grant Hill and Zydrunas Ilgauskas can make the team, but Steve Francis gets left off.

The true crime is that Vince Carter made the allstar team when he admits he didn't really try hard when he was in Toronto. Boy, what an allstar. Same goes for T-Mac

Yeah, that's fan voting for ya. Why in the world would you play Yao Ming over 2 other players (tim Duncan, Amare Staudemire) when they are obviously the better talents even though they want to be forwards. I mean, come on... How many of Yao Mings' votes were from this continent anyways?

Another thing. How is it Manu Ginobli makes the bench and Elton Brand does not? Just looking over their stats and Elton Brand looks like a more rounded player than Manu. Don't get me wrong, I was there watching Ginobli hitting 40+ points against Phoenix, but does one great game depict whether or not someone is better than someone else even though they are more consistant?

Mr Negative! This is the crowning moment of basketball!

I have a passing interest in it but until the slam dunk competition determines home court advantage in the championship series, I can't get too worked up about it.

Baseball made it interesting finally with home field being determined by the game...which made it so much sweeter to see Clemens get rocked for 6 in the first.

I just can't work up much interest in it. Game means nothing. Players play half-hearted most of the time trying to avoid getting hurt. Bleh.

I'm with Kel on this one. All of the All-Star games are a joke. I used to like the NBA All-Star games back when the best 3-pt shooters entered into it and they were names you knew and mainly back when the best of the best participated in the Slam Dunk competition.

Remember back in the day when Wilkins, MJ, Spud, etc were all in the Slam Dunk Competition every year?

The game itself? Only watchable to see the superstars show off. But nowadays most of the players show off every night.

That's why I'll be watching good team basketball during the regular season served up to me by the Suns and Heat!

The 1984-85 Gatorade Slam-dunk comp was held at Indianapolis Market Square Arena during All-Star Saturday.
The contestants were :

Slam-dunk Contestants Team Height
Dominique Wilkins Atlanta 6' 7 "
Clyde Drexler Blazers 6' 7 "
Michael Jordan Bulls 6' 6 "
Darrell Griffith Utah 6' 4 "
Terence Stansbury Indiana 6' 5 "
Orlando Woolridge Bulls 6' 9 "

Larry Nance won the competition last year by beating Dr. J. These two qualify to the semi-final round.

Semi-final Team Height
Larry Nance Phoenix 6' 10"
Julius Erving Sixers 6' 10"
Oh hell yeah!
1987 FINAL PLACINGS 1. Michael Jordan
2. Jerome Kersey
3. Terence Stansbury
4. Clyde Drexler
5. Ron Harper
6. Johnny Dawkins
T-7. Tom Chambers
T-7. Gerald Wilkins
1988 FINAL PLACINGS 1. Michael Jordan
2. Dominique Wilkins
3. Clyde Drexler
4. Otis Smith
5. Jerome Kersey
6. Greg Anderson
7. Spud Webb

Last year????????
FIRST ROUND Top two advance
Jason Richardson, Golden State, 95
Fred Jones, Indiana, 92
Chris Andersen, Denver, 88
Ricky Davis, Boston, 76

FINALS
Fred Jones def. Jason Richardson, 86-78

Wow. Exciting eh?

The reason Yao gets the nod is because the fans get to vote the starting lineup. Amare doesn't start because there is no way he was getting more votes than Duncan/Garnett at forward and Amare refused to be listed on the allstar ballot as a "center" he chose to be a forward even though for all intents and purposes, he plays center for the Suns.

That's because Amare is a forward. When they announce lineups and display them on TV for Suns games it's G G F F F. They could just as easliy announce it as G G G F F.

If it looks like a forward and plays like a forward, it is a forward.

1988 Slam Dunk contest was rigged.

Jordan won simply because it was in CHicago. Dominique should have won that one.

Regardless it was the best slam dunk contest that will ever happen in the history of planet earth period.

And that is the exact reason that Yao gets to start over Amare.

But at least the Suns fans will get to see all the 3 Suns' on the floor at one time.

If Amare was listed as a center, he would have gotten a ton more votes and probably more than Yao and would be starting as Center. I think it is up to the player what they prefer to be listed as.
