OSNABRUECK, Germany (Reuters) - Three British soldiers have pleaded not guilty at a court martial to abusing and sexually humiliating Iraqi civilians in May 2003, although one admitted he had beaten a detained man.
Lance corporals Darren Larkin and Mark Cooley and Corporal Daniel Kenyon, all from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, face charges of mistreating Iraqis during an operation to stop looting in the chaotic weeks after the invasion of Iraq.
The accusations surfaced when staff at a photo development laboratory in Britain showed police pictures of apparent abuse.
"It cannot be said that these photographs depict images which are anything but shocking and appalling," prosecutor Nick Clapham said as he handed out folders containing the photos.
Clapham described scenes of simulated anal and oral sex, simulated beatings and an Iraqi man grimacing in fear.
