Newsgroups are the win. Now that the new Newsleecher 2.0 has an insta super search feature to scan all binary groups for files at once, it's the easiest and fastest way possible to grab files.
If you know how to use newsgroups to grab binary files, I suggest you trial the beta for Newsleecher 2.0 (not the 1.0). It's free for 15 days but you'll see it's worth the first day after your first search.

Cox Cable has excellent newgroups so I've never had to use an alternative. I think Aslanna has used a few and might have a good recommendation. If you have cable, there's a good chance you could be grabbing at least 1 GB an hour off of newsgroups. I quite a bit faster than that but it all depends on how fast the newserver is and possibly how many concurrent connections they allow.
I ran across the bi-torrent site earlier after I had heard of the shutdown. It looks to be a mirror right? If so, that should be good news while they are still around.

Hmmmm it seems this is not a good link anymore. Anyone got another, please?
