I found out 4 years ago that someone had stolen my social security number. Since then life has been hell keeping my credit report clean. Recently congress passed a law requiring the credit companies to provide a free report every year. You can access it through this website.
They say 1 in 4 reports has incorrect information either through error or stolen identity. Do yourself a favor, check yours out, after all it is free.

I can empathize. Ten years ago I had my SS# stolen by someone in CA (I live in WI). They used it to get free electric and phone service out there. The credit companies are a real bitch to work with. You have to practically cut an arm off to show your sincerity and get them to drop you from their records.

You are allowed to apply for a federal tax ID which is the same format as a social security number if you want and use it to apply for jobs, credit cards etc. Foreigners get them for school and such. The ones I've seen have started out 008- or some other odd looking first 3 digits.
I know quite a bit about credit fraud from having the worst job ever for awhile in college as a credit card collections "analyst". In some respects it was entertaining tracking down deadbeats for money. Mostly it sucked except for the knowledge I gained about how credit works and the loopholes ect.
