(CNSNews.com) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell is launching a new organization called The Faith and Values Coalition, which he describes as a "21st century resurrection of the Moral Majority."

The new coalition will lobby for pro-life judicial appointments; a federal amendment barring same-sex marriage; and the election of another conservative president in 2008.

Falwell, now 71, said he would serve as national chairman of the new coalition for four years.

"Following the sweeping re-election of President Bush and a new generation of conservative lawmakers nationwide, a new organization, The Faith and Values Coalition (TFVC), has been launched," Falwell announced Tuesday from his headquarters in Lynchburg, Va..

He said the group would capitalize on the momentum of the November 2 elections "to maintain an evangelical revolution of voters who will continue to go to the polls to 'vote Christian.'"

Mathew Staver, founder and general counsel of the Orlando, Fla.-based Liberty Counsel, will serve as vice-chairman of The Faith and Values Coalition. Falwell's son Jonathan will serve as executive director. And theologian Dr. Tim LaHaye will serve as the board chairman.

"One of our primary commitments is to help make President Bush's second term the most successful in American history," Falwell said. "He will certainly need the consistent prayer and support of the evangelical community as he continues to spearhead the international war on terror and the effort to safeguard America."

Three priorities

Falwell said the new organization has a three-fold platform:

-- the confirmation of pro-life, strict constructionist U.S. Supreme Court justices and other federal judges;

-- the passage of a Federal Marriage Amendment;

-- the election of another socially, fiscally, and politically conservative president in 2008.

"My new leadership role in TFVC reminds me of a similar commitment I made more than a quarter-century ago," Falwell said in a press release. "It was April 1979. I had just founded the Moral Majority and agreed to devote five years to its leadership. I actually gave ten years of my life before disbanding the organization in 1989 to focus on the expansion of Liberty University."

"At that time, God burdened my heart to mobilize religious conservatives around a pro-life, pro-family, strong national defense and pro-Israel platform, designed to return America to her Judeo-Christian heritage. And I distinctively feel that burden again," he said on Tuesday.

"Our nation simply cannot continue as we know it if we allow out-of-control lawmakers and radical judges -- working at the whims of society -- to alter the moral foundations of America."

Falwell noted that during Moral Majority's heyday, "we registered millions of new voters and re-activated millions more. More than 100,000 pastors, priests and rabbis and nearly seven million families joined hands and hearts to reclaim America for God. Many historians believe the result was the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and the genesis of what the media calls the 'Religious Right.'"

Falwell said that on election night 2004, as the returns came in, "I actually shed tears of joy as I saw the fruit of a quarter century of hard work." Of the 116 Americans who voted, more than 30 million were evangelical Christians who voted their moral convictions, Falwell noted.

"I proudly say - they voted Christian!"

Falwell credits several "Christian giants" for turning out the vote: They include Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family; Dr. Donald Wildmon of the American

Family Association; Dr. D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries, Dr. John Hagee of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio; the many leaders of the Arlington Group; the "upstart, alternative" Internet news sites; and more than 225,000 evangelical pastors.

Falwell said his vision for the future includes an effort to multiply the voter turnout for the 2006 and 2008 elections.

"As national chairman of TFVC, I am committed to lending my influence to help send out at least 40 million evangelical voters in 2008. The thought of a Hillary Clinton or John Edwards presidency is simply unacceptable (and quite frightening)," he said.

Falwell said he is praying for the strength and wisdom to "successfully complete my 'salt of the earth' ministry. America is worth saving," he said. "Our children and children's children will hold us accountable if we fail."

The TFVC plans to organize in all 50 states, "enlisting and training millions of Americans to become partners in this exciting task of bringing this nation back to the moral values of faith and family on which it was founded."

Falwell said his National Liberty Journal newspaper will serve as a springboard for the effort.

"I urge my friends around the country to immediately get involved and join me in this four-year commitment, which is really an investment in America, in our children and in our children's children."
Freedom of speech makes it much easier to spot the idiots.

Not directly, no. I think maybe he means you voted for the continuing swing towards the right. America is becoming ultra-conservative and retards like Falwell see this as a sign to crawl back out of their holes.

Have you guys ever heard Jerry Falwell speak? He's a good guy, and he's anything but retarded. Why would you label him like that just because you don't like his politics?

At some point you religion-fearing folka re going to realize you're a minority and, while welcome to your fear, you're not going to ignore the millions of people with beliefs different than yours. Great thing about America is that everyone has the right to get their agenda heard.

Tosser... religion is all about control through fear, and so has the US government been for decades; reds under the bed, MAD, terrorism, etc ad nauseum.

Yet another example of an absolutely terrible representation of both christianity and republican/conservative ideals. People like this you should just ignore since they do not in any way, shape or form represent the type of thought processes that are prevalent in most educated citizens and republican voters. Let's just hope this 71 year old has a heart attack when he hires his next 14 year old prostitute to engage in sodomistic sexual perversians he speaks out against every Sunday. This man is a bigot and a chauvanistic pig, I despise that people use him as stereotype for christians and Republicans.

Who said anything about being afraid of religious freaks? As I've said before you can believe in anything you want and I more than likely won't care. I don't feel threatened by it since I don't give a shit. I shall explain it in simple terms so that you can understand what I am trying to say instead of reading some religious paranoia into it:

Person A has belief A
Person B couldn't care less what Person A believes in
Person A thinks Person B should also have belief A
Person A tries to force their belief upon person B
Person B now cares, and has an opinion on, belief A since it impacts them

Seems simple enough for me. I don't want another persons view of morality forced upon me. I'm an adult free to live my life my own way (within the well accepted laws of society) and you're free to do the same. I don't want to be "saved". I don't need to be "saved". Everyone believes their religion is the one true religion. I hate to break it to them but it's not. None of them.

It seems to me people the religious nuts like Falwell are the ones are afraid. Afraid of anyone who doesn't think like them or believe in the same thing they do. That's the true fear in America.

(Edit-A and B is complicated for Iksars)

Use a bowl of green jello as an analogy next time aslanna. A bowl of green jello can be compared to anything.

Don't lump in all conservatives with the religious freaks that voted for Bush. I'm atheist to the core but I'd rather deal with the religious people and have a secure country than still have the religious issue and have confused leadership when it comes to our national security.

Religion is dying out in america. It's still good for a vote but how can anyone not see that we are far far less religious in the 21st century than just 10-20 years ago. I'm not bashing the religious americans and understand the bible belt isn't going to change anytime soon. I'm saying that my day to day life isn't impacted enough for me to vote democrat over republican on the religious issue alone.

Bullshit Winnow :) It's the Freaks that got Bush elected again. Thinking people like yourself are very few among his supporters.

What sacres me about people like Fallwell is that being a Christian isn't enough. He is talking to the radicals, note he said Evangelical Christians which wouldn't include many of the main stream prostant churches nor Catholics. The goal of the Evangelicals IS to force their few of morality on everyone else. He also said people who voted for Bush "voted Christian" that is rediculas. As a Christian who actually thinks, reads and feels I don't believe the wonders of my faith can be boiled down into a couple of issues... issues that, for all practicle purposes either have little to do with Christianity OR Bush's policies do the exact opposite of what he says he supports.

The problem is that most people are sheep and want to be told exactly what to believe and do... it makes it easier, it's not their fault if something goes wrong then... right?

This country is split and that split will continue to go unless we get some moderates in who can see and appease the freaks on either side.

Someone said Fallwell is coming back out because it's popular again, BINGO! He can make a lot of money again off the ignorance of the common man. My only comfort is this is that one day he will have to stand before God and try to explain why he used Him to get rich off many of those who needed Him the most.

Frankly it's disgusting..

I didn't say he was right, I said I like him and he's not stupid =p

I like Jessie Jackson too.

Trying to characterize religion as control through fear is a little misleading, and I think represents a very narrow view. Tell me what kind of control is not through some form of fear? It's all about fear of loss. The only difference is what is at stake.

What world are you living in? Fallwell is absolutly main stream Christianity, as his numbers demonstrated in the past and will likely demonstrate again. He (and Robertson) are huge figures in American Christianity with enormous followings. His bigotted mentality is exactly the what got the Christian base of the Republican party motivated to elect Bush. If people like him were just some fringe, people like me wouldn't be so concerned. But, sadly, that is not the case. Fallwell defines American Christianity.

Yeah cause Television Evangelists are top notch portraits of Morals and Values. Just like Jim Baker and his wife Tammy Fay...
If you think Falwell defines American Christianity you need to seriously learn what that is, Christianity is diverse just like other religions. Stereotyping an entire faith like that shows ignorance and usually abject stupidity. But then again you shouldn't care "Christians Suck". Falwell is a glory hound and a piece of shit. I'm pretty sure he's dirtier than a L.A. Loan Shark.

Sylvos, while I agree with you that people like Falwell are NOT what most Christians are truly like. He is his cronies are the fastest growing groups in Christianity and have many more followers when put together than you might think. While many people might disagree with some of the points from from many of the Televangelist (sp?) many many many people follow someone similar.

Bush met with the 12 largest evangelical groups in 1987 in order to garner their support for his father. At that point he told his best friend "I don't need to campaign, all I need to do is motivate this people and I could actually be Gov. of Tx" Obviously that has carried on since then as well.

While many thinking Christians agree that Falwell and his followers are freaks, we don't have TV shows and millions of dollars to get the ture message of the Gospels out. Instead people are being spoon fed exactly what Dar is talking about on a daily basis and more and more people are begining to believe it... along with the hatred and bigotry thats included.

That scares me...

nice to hear from a true Christian

unfortunately a small majority of your religion has been corrupted by preachers and priests filled with hate like falwell and robertson

Jesus (allegedly) didn’t go around judging people, he purposely made it so he hung around the prostitutes, theifs, sick, and murderers....people that needed him . that and he stood against oppressive factions in the Jewish hierarchy and preached FREE WILL, he didnt hate gay people or working women and im sure if he were around today he would stand for most socially liberal ideals (with the probable exception of abortion)

Yeah you touched a nerve, it pisses me off to no end that the average American is so bloody dumb that they do not realize that neither major party is worth a damn. The fact that the parties have stablized for almost 100 years now should be a clear sign there is a problem, and people are too ignorant to do anything else than engage in hating one or the other, I think both the vehment republicans and democrats here are fools, none of them truly had a candidate that represented their beliefs but they ranted for a year about it.

Yeah you touched a nerve, the nerve that throbs when people think their liberty is not worth caring about enough to actually possess a clue.

Something else worth re-stating is that all politicians stink. Really badly. Like a baboon's ass stuffed with burning tires.

Just the opposite actually. We'll see a large revival of religion in this country during our lifetimes. There have been 2 in our short history and the cycle is coming around again.

Studies prove that religion arises when the economy and/or quality of life goes down

Actually your both right. Unfortunately 40% of our country didn’t vote last time, and most of those idiots that don’t vote are liberal and non religious, when volunteering on election day I hear that all the godamned time from both republicans and democrats. Of course there opinion doesn’t matter because they are too lazy, don’t care, or don’t think there vote counts (and in most cases it doesn’t) but liberal minded people still hold a small majority in our population…but of course that doesn’t matter

Religious crispies vote, they vote united, there organized and they are told every Sunday what to believe and subliminally who to vote for. We will hear more from the religious right over the next four years due to they are in complete power over our country, but a silent majority is still against them

Relating to the post I made about my interpretation of Jesus in another thread…you have to notice the Christians that overwhelmingly vote liberal. You see in movies the churches filled with African Americans and others singing, enjoying and preaching “the good news” of Jesus. These people vote for choice and freedom.
Unfortunately most Christians “mourn” there faith and “fear” there tyrannical image of god, who exist to punish and be an egotistical asshole dictator seeking blind servants. These people, following Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson….you know who they vote for

It depends in your interpretation I guess, if you see god as a caring teacher and a guide you will have one set of beliefs, if you see him as a intimidating judge and a dictator, you will have another

Of course im agnostic but I would imagine a “god” being an abstract life-force meant to support balance, peace and equality
