For a non-New Yorker...
What's the difference between a Mets Fan and a Yankees fan? I realize that's a huge generalization, but besides location within the city, is there any special symbolism, local pride, whatever associated with a particular team?

Territorialy, and this is a broad and unfair generalization:
Queens/Staten Island people are Mets fans.
Manhattan/Bronx people are Yankees fans.
Brooklyn people are pining for the loss of the Dodgers.
Another way to look at it, from my perspective as a Red Sox fan, is that Mets fans don't suck as hard as Yankees fans. Generally New York sports teams are to be reviled and despised.

New York has four teams really, Besides the Mets and Yanks, you still have Dodger and Giant fans who never changed over when they moved out.
When either the Mets or the Yanks do well, a certain contingent sways in that direction. These days, the Yanks fans are a mixed bag of corporate outtings and star searchers. Even though the place was packed to the gills nightly, it was pretty civil, mostly because they had such a good home record.
Mets fans hate. They hate just about everyone including themselves. They yell at their own players from the stands and curse at everybody. It's really pretty shitty to be honest. They think that they're more die-hard because they back a losing team.
Ohh, and both have more passion in their pinky for their teams' than a Braves fan.
