Got a problem I'm hoping some of you can help with.
I have 2 PCs on a home network. The PCs are attached to a 100 mb/s 4 port hub that uplinks to a Linksys router. The router is attached to a DSL modem and provides Internet connectivity to both PCs. Both PCs are running Windows XP Pro. Both PCs are defined as being part of the same workgroup, xyz-network.
There is a folder on Mosep that all my music is stored on. I have that set up as a share named My Music which I was accessing on Jet to play music. I had other shares on the two machines for file sharing across the PCs but that's the main one.
After installing SP2 neither PC can see the shares on the other one, or for that matter neither PC can see the other one in My Network Places. I have confirmed that sharing is not disabled and the folders still appear with sharing icons in Explorer.
Has anyone else experiences shares going away after installing SP2 and how can I get these back?
Check to see if NetBIOS over TCP/IP has been disabled during the installation. This didn't happen to me, and I have a relatively similar configuration, but I've heard of it being disabled during the SP2 installation. Might only be for XP Home vs. Pro???

I thought that with SP2 if you were having issues with things like this, that you could just turn off the XP firewall and it would be like SP2 wasn't even there? At least that's what I seem to remember everyone saying in another thread when the hassles of SP2 came up.

It's standard for large corporations to conduct their own tests on new software. Your cheeseball setup doesn't matter. It's not a beta. Its a final release.

I installed SP2 on my gaming rig, disabled all the shit I don't need (everything), and it was still killing my performance in games. I went from ~25 fps in COH to 5-10 average. Get rid of it, bam, performance returns.
Given that my network is hidden behind a NAT router, I'm not too worried about haxxors stealing my megahurtz.

I have a Null Share as well and it works fine.
Siji, this is not an issue you'd even need the firewall for. It would be prudent to disable it then test, but the firewall shouldn't be the issue here.
Out of curiosity, how many who are having issues with SP2 installed it from the Windows Update site, and how many installed it from the IT site (243MB DL if I remember correctly). I installed from the IT site.

As soon as I realized that I couldn't see shares or other workstations in my workgroup I tried disabling the built in firewall, to no effect.
I will apply some of your suggestions this evening. As always thanks for your feedback folks!

Grabbed it off the newsgroups. It works fine connecting to the update center.
There is also a nice version with SP2 integrated into the XP install CD. Even you you have a legit copy of windows XP, I'd recommend getting it to make life easier if you have to reinstall the entire OS on a new HD etc.
Funny you guys are talking about SP2 for XP. I recently updated to it and it then did not allow windows set up. I showed a few friends and I was forced to install 2000 pro(even tho I prefer it now).
My new roommate had SP2 on his computer, and he was experiencing similar problems as I. His FPS would dip down below 20 during missions in COH, and under 10 in popular city zones. He uninstalled this, and his FPS jumped to ~150 fps in missions and ~60 fps in cities.
I know his windows installation was clean, as I built his machine myself. There is no weird crap installed, and his video drivers are the latest from ATI.
In conclusion: IF YOU PLAY COH, UNINSTALL THIS FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT.

I have SP2 installed on my laptop, my desktop, both my daughter's desktops and the "general use" desktop in the living room and have no issues. Each machine has various shares setup to others depending on the need.
I have not had any issue with any shares, CoH, or even the WoW stress beta.
Was putting together a machine at work and decided to give SP2 a shot on a clean install of XP. The machine absolutely crawled. Uninstalled SP2 and it worked just fine.
So, I restate my previous opinion. MS and SP2 can kiss my arse.
And while they're at it, Norton can kiss it as well for the abortion of a product line 2005 has become.
