Why does Alberta hate Ontario?
Because the poor western provinces are neglected and ignored. Mostly it stems from envy tho!
Partially. Resentment, yes. Envy, no.
We have nothing to envy: we have one of the highest percentages of university educated populations in the country (including the highest levels of engineering and technical professionals in the country). We have the most affluent population and the lowest provincial income taxes in the country. Hell, we even have better sports teams.
Albertans resent that over the past 30 years there have been 2 consistent contributors to the country's economic growth: Ontario and Alberta. When the other provinces get their equalization payments from Ottawa, it is really coming from one of those 2 provinces (and sometimes BC, depending on how fucked up things are there). One chooses the government (and they seem to have a fascination with retards from Quebec like Trudeau, Mulroney, Chretien and now Martin), the other one gets told "your interests/concerns/ideas do not interest the rest of the country, so STFU and pay our way".
Fate played a part in giving Alberta a lot of natural wealth, and we are not adverse to sharing it, however we do hate being dictated to and having our concerns ignored, as Ottawa chooses to impose the values of those who elected them (Ontario) on the rest of us. We are probably the most extreme of the Western provinces in our alienation, as we have the least to gain from Confederation as it currently sits. Whether it was the NEP under Trudeau, debt mismanagement and constitutional "reform" under Trudeau and Mulroney, the misguided abortion known as Kyoto or the National Gun Registry under Chretien: it is Ontario and Quebec values that get inflicted on the rest of us.
It sucks being told to pay for lunch but we're not allowed to participate in the conversation.
