Notebooks: Pentium M vs. P4

Post by flankmen »

Does anyone have any experience with the Pentium M mobile processor?

I'm comparing 2 similarly priced systems, one with the Pentium M 1.5GHz, and one with a P4 2.8GHz; most other features are relatively similar. The only other major differences are that the Pentium M model is noticably lighter (1.25lbs), a little thinner(<1/4 inch), and has a slightly better battery.

I realize that the the Pentium M model is going to be sacrificing processing power for extended battery life and slightly better mobility, but I'm wondering if the sacrifice is worth it. It will be used by a college student, who will be lugging it back and forth on the subway on a daily basis, and will have wireless network access in most campus facilities.

The decision isn't life or death, as the notebook won't be used for anything strenuous (no gaming, advanced multimedia, etc); just curious if anyone has any experience in this area.

I'm using a Pentium M 1.6 ghz at work and the thing kicks ass.

WoW and City of Heroes run quite well on this system so that should be a good indicator of it's performance.

If this is gonna be a travelling/productivity laptop, I'd highly recommend the lighter Pentium M model.
