High-Stakes Convention
Poll Shows Support for Kerry Weakens on Issues and Attributes

Analysis
By Gary Langer

July 26, 2004— The critical convention season begins with John Kerry losing momentum at just the hour he'd like to be gaining it: President Bush has clawed back on issues and attributes alike, reclaiming significant ground that Kerry had taken a month ago.
After all the theatrics, scare tactics, and Michael Moore movies have gone.......the actual issues will be left for the majority of "thinking" people to vote on. That's when Kerry will lose.

Is there more to that article or is this selective quoting? I am on the fence so I am not harping. It is best to put the whole article in or at least a link to it else people think there is something being hidden or not said in your post.

interesting, it shows kerry slowed down right before the convention and people favored Bush on qualities. But it also shows Bush's approval rate at lower then ever. Its going to get very interesting 30 days before elections.

This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone July 22-25 among a random national sample of 1,202 adults, including 909 registered voters. The results have a three-point error margin.
Opinion polls like this tend to change from week to week in the months coming up to an election.

You can be sure the Bush administration will do something stupid in the next week or two to bring those numbers back in line to where they have been.

It will stay pretty even going up and down imo until the debates, seeing an intelligent competitor with a plan for america against a bumbling religious-right dumbass will let the american people know who to vote for

People also need to realize four more years of Bush means a very good chance of all abortion rights being lost, as a new supreme court judge comes in, Kerry needs to make a point of that.

It's also of note that the statistics have a +/- 3 pt margin of error. Meaning that Kerry could be 49 and Bush could be 45 or Bush could be ahead by much more... OR more likely they are still even...

Bush will never allow himself to debate Kerry. He is too inept and he would get owned like a clubbed baby seal. He (or the puppeteer with their hand up his ass) are aware of this.

Cheney will never allow himself to debate Edwards. While Cheney is considerably more astute than GW, he has been nailed numerous times by the press for lying about his past statements. Also, Edwards would bury him in terms of charisma and platform. An old lying bastard who has been letting his old company fleece the country with non bid contracts does not want to get up there against a young guy with a great reputation who's central platform is federal reform. Cheney is keenly aware of this.

The only chance of a debate occuring at all would be if Bush is somehow unable to snow over the 911 Commision findings, which while bipartisan are nothing compared to the larger BS he has gotten by the american public. Even then, it would take something like Nadar riding his ballsack like a rabid poodle to force Bush into a debate. This is pretty unlikely.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.

Cheney did a knockout job debating Lieberman last round.

It was polite, civil, and cleverly dominated by Cheney. I bet he could take on Edwards.

Bush is a solid 5 on a debate scale of 1 to 10. He'd be rough and unpolished yet functional in a debate against Kerry.

Yet that very same rough unpolished manner would just might endear Bush to people who dislike slick politicians.

Cheney did best Leiberman, but Leiberman has no presence and little in the way of sharp thinking. In short, Cheney went in as the superior debator, no doubt garnered from years of corperate PR experience. It is no suprise he buried Leiberman in that debate.

Edwards is a lot more on the ball than Leiberman and significantly more charismatic than Cheney. But even if all other factors were equal, Edwards could beat him simply by hammering him on the Halliburton, Enron, and direct contradictions of his prior public statements. The only thing approaching dirt that Cheney can harp on Edwards for is that he was a lawyer before being a rep and that a lot of his reform efforts have centered around federal litigation laws. This is a stretch at best and dangerous considering that Cheney was a corperate shark and can easily be painted a war profiteer. Cheney is just lucky that the whole exposing the identity of a diplomats CIA wife has been pushed far enough out of the picture or it would be Nixon vs Kenedy all over again.

As for Bush, well, I am going to have to completely disagree with you. Anyone who cannot handle press conferences or even direct questioning by federal agencies without huge supervision is not going to be able to debate effectively. He also has problems with even pronouncing names related to vital national concerns properly, which will not exactly help make him look better to the american public. The reason he doesn't look as bad next to Kerry has more to do with Kerry being a mediocre public speaker, than any prowess Bush has. The only thing Bush has in his favor in a debate situation is that Kerry can't attack him openly on the really nutso fundie stuff, like his faith based initiative and every child gets prozac idea. This leaves the environment, the deficit, war profiteering, prisoner abuse, Iraqi war justification, and abysmal foreign policy. Kerry won't have to do well to out manuever Bush in the debate with that material, which is good for him since Kerry is, frankly, not much of a public speaker.

Cheney is a decent debater, very tricksy. It should be interesting to see Edwards go up against him if he takes off the gloves he had on during the primary debates. He certainly has an intimidating resume.

Bush's only hope in a debate is too string out his answers so long that he bores and confuses the audience while restricting the number of questions he has to answer. If the answer period is restricted it will probably be a gruesome display.

Have any debates been scheduled?

But what happen when Kerry decide to raise questions NOT on the premade list that Bush got read to him before the argument?

kerry has the charisma of a jar of vaseline. I respect him as a person and as a politician, but he won't run circles around bush in a debate. he will probably come out on top, but it won't be a kennedy/nixon type affair. kerry is also too classy to counter bush if bush goes into attack mode like he's been doing since the primaries.

I'd have to disagree. Personally, I don't think the whole Kerry campaign has even started to use all of the extremely vast amounts of damaging information that's readily available on Bush. And I don't see Kerry backing down or away from Bush.
