4X DVD is old stuff...is it only DVD-R or DVD+-R? DVD-Rs can be had for under 1.00 each now and quality DVD 8X DVD +-R drives can be had in the 60.00 range with no rebates to deal with.

You can even get the new double layered DVD writers for 85.00 from Newegg on their front page now:

http://newegg.com/

If you look through there you'll see DVD 8X -+ drives in the 60.00 range.

Newegg owns for reliability and customer service.

I have no specific views on that particular model but I'm sure you could find numerous reviews on the web.

Two things I don't like about it though: 4x and -

I have that dual-layer NEC drive from newegg and have no issues with it.
8x +- and dual-layer for $86 isn't a bad deal.

Keep in mind that double layered DVD media is expensive and you won't use it often atm but getting one is a good idea as the prices will drop on the media soon enough. 8X is nice as you can wait quite awhile for a full DVD to burn at slow speeds. Again, a lot if the DVD media is 4X atm as well but prices are dropping fast and buying 4X media to begin with is no big deal.

Can get 25 pack DVD-Rs or +Rs at Frys for .57 a DVD now. Anything under 1.00 for 4.4gb storage isn't bad.

Rent those movies and copy them Voro! You know you want to!

It may not be a piece of shit quality-wise but it's the high speed tech equilvalent of buying WW2 technology!

I've got the same drive (NEC 2510A) and love it.

One thing.. There's a utility out there that you'll need to set some bit setting that puts the dual layer burning (not the same as normal dvd burning) into DVD-ROM compatibility mode so that your home DVD player will have a better chance at playing movies burned on dual layer discs.. if you can't find it, let me know. It's an unofficial thing from NEC. Supposedly their people have said they're not going to provide an official firmware patch or anything to give you the ability to set it otherwise. Remember, this is all only for dual layer burning.
