No_CD Hacks and Cracks

Post by Bubba Grizz »

This is inspired mainly by the thread Dregor started. Llaffer mentioned using alcohol 120% and what it can do. I think it would be cool if we could put together a step by step guide on how to do this type of thing. We'll keep it all hypothetical if needs be.

For example, I would love to be able to play my Age of Conquerors without having to put in a CD all the damn time. I own the game but my cd rom is really loud and annoying.

Starting fresh without previously downloading Alcohol 120%. How would I create a Virtual CD and how would I use it? Also, if I am going to play online or in a lan setting will this be incompatible with what they are using? Would I need to create a new Virtual CD each time a patch comes out? (just tossing out any likely questions)

Currently I have CloneCD on my machine and have most of my games imaged. Is there a way to use those images? I know that if I burn a copy of a game (just one solely for back up purposes) it doesn't always work. One such game is Civilization 3: Play the World.

Are there other products out there that perform these kinds of services to the law abiding owner of such games?

OK well here is what I do. I am not sure if this is what you want but I setup Virtual Drives. In Alcohol click on Virtual Drive under the Options menu. Click on how many drives you want. Alcohol will setup pretty much everything for you. Keep everything defaulted the way the program has it. This will give you virtual drives with letters such as (g: , h:, i: ) etc.

At this point make an image of your game CD with whichever program you want you can even use Alcohol if you want. Once you have this image created go back into Alcohol. You will have a list of virtual drives that you have setup (mine show at the bottom of the screen). Right click on one of the virtual drives and click on Mount Image. Select the image that you just created. You now have a virtual drive with what the computer thinks it's something like a CD-ROM or something with your game CD in it. You can double click on it, explore it etc just like a regular CD-ROM.

The only thing is that you will have to have the game installed and then an image of the entire CD on top of that. So that takes up a bit of room but it beats having to search for CDs or having your loud CD-rom humming away all the time.

You can mount and unmount images in like 3 or 4 seconds depending on the speed of your computer. The only downfall is the amount of room needed for those image files.

Anyhow, I hope that is what you were asking for. :)

*edit*

Also patches and such will not effect your image you created because the CD itself never gets update. Only the game directories.

This is also a great way of checking out if a game you just downloaded works without having to burn it on CD. Not that I do that ..... dahh dahh dahhhhhh

Thanks, this is very much what I was looking for. Question though, do you use a registered version of Alcohol 120%? Or do they have free trial period and such? As far as space goes, I just have to shuffle around some porn on my 120gig drive and I'll be fine.

Or you could go to http://www.gamecopyworld.com and check if they have a no-cd fix, freeing up space on your HD equal to the size of the image.

There is a free trial download of Alcohol 120% somewhere .. you might have to google it for the homepage.

I think it is good for 30 days, then you have to buy it or crack it

Civilization III: Play the World will not successfully run after being imaged and mounted (or burned from image). I have tried 3 different formats and it still won't work.

Download ClonyXXL and run it on your disk.

It will tell you what type of copy protection it has.

Then when you use Alcohol 120% to make the image, tell it what type of copy protection that ClonyXXL told you, and it should work.

ClonyXXL isn't in English, but it's not that hard - choose the CD you want to scan, and click the big button.

Ok works now. Thanks guys. The reason I don't go to gamecopy or any of those other sites is because I hate the dirty feeling I get once I leave those sites. I have to run my ad killers and virus scan each time. Besides, I have room on my computer and I actually own the games I am making images of so I don't mind.

Daemon tools is good for loading existing images, whether self created or downloaded. Same as Alcohol, just without the burner...or a price tag.

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?
