Self Chilling Beer Can

Post by Winnow »

Scientists have developed a self-chilling beer can that can drop the temperature of the drink down to a chilling 37.4° in about three minutes. After the drink has been chilled, it will stay cold for up to an hour. The new can has been developed by Tempra Technology and they call it the "I*C*CAN". The technology is completely safe to use as it contains no toxins, gases nor is the drink highly pressurized.

The contents within the can is surrounded by a gel that drains off when the bottom of the can is twisted. There is also a insulated heat absorbing product a the bottom of the can. Once activated the temperature of the liquid drops to near freezing temperatures. The principle behind this, is similar to what it's like we you step out of a hot shower and feel very cool.

Tempra Technology has already signed deals with large firms like Heineken, Coke, Pepsi, and Budweiser. The price for cans that use this chilling technology, will be about twice what you would pay for a drink without the cooler. However, prices are expected to drop as the demand for the technology grows. Cans using this technology should hit store shelves in July. :)
Hope it works as advertised.

Wonder how expensive it'd make beer. Also whether it can be recycled afterwards. Interesting stuff though, heard them talking about it on the radio.

Here their website:

The Instant Cool Can (I.C. Can™) uses a 100% safe and environmentally friendly self-chilling process that cools by using brilliantly simple water evaporation
Doesn't sound like it will increase waste to me!

Excellent. The question is will the technology ever allow for the containers to be less expensive than those from the local chilled vending machine?

I bring soda by the 12 pack to work because of cost versus vending machines and self chilling containers would rock, but not if it was cheaper to walk over to the machine and grab a cold one.

No, that's not what it says. It just says environmentally friendly. That's not the same thing.

Since the beer itself costs nothing compared to the bottling/canning, I'm sure it will go up a bit.

Can technology, shit, when I was in college Keystone first came out, bottled beer in a can I think was the hook. The other hook (and the reason why I'd even know anything about this) was the a warm case only cost $7.99. Of course, that didn't match the $5.99 a case for Meister Brau, but then, we were all class.

Holy shit I'm gettin' old

What you do is pick up a cold bottled beer along with a six-pack of self cooling cans. Drink your tasty bottled beverage and then hit the insta cool brews after your taste buds have lost their sensitivity!
