Now... I can't really make any predictions because there's a lot I haven't seen this year. I just think Sean Astin should have been nominated for his role as Sam. :(

And Peter Jackson better win... same with RotK for best picture.

Sean Astin was robbed. He made the third movie. However, the Academy only looks at serious roles and a movie based on the greatest Fantasy work of all time just doesn't work for them. They are too stupid to understand it.+

I also noticed this morning but forgot to mention that LotR: RotK did NOT get a Cinematography nomination. Like WTF?

I WILL predict though, that Finding Nemo gets Best Animated Film.

I hope Depp wins best actor. He was amazing in Pirates. I've really grown to enjoy him as an actor with each passing role he's done, he's quite diverse.

Everytime the Osccars roll around, I realize how many movies I missed out on during the year :(

I have loved Johnny Depp since 21 Jump Street. It would be really cool if he finally got the recognition he deserves.

I can't believe how many nominations Master and Commander got. That movie was visually appealing, but dramatically apalling. It was just horrible.

And RotK was robbed. Bandits! All of them!

I seriously doubt Depp will win, the nomination is a win on its own in terms of recognition, Academy still favors dramatic roles over comedic ones for main awards.

If I was to bet money I'd bet on Sean penn or Bill Murray to win lead role award.

Well, I'll have a go at this. Most of my picks will be based on what other people have said about movies/roles since out of everything that got nominations, I only saw RotK and Pirates.

Diane Keaton was nominated for Best Actress for "Something's Gotta Give" but Scarlet Johansson wasn't for "Lost in Translation"? I hate the Academy Awards.

Just for the hell of it, here's what I'd like to see (but definitely not what I expect):

Picture: Lost in Translation (although I expect RotK to win, and would be happy with that as well)

Best Actor: Bill Murray, or possibly Ben Kingsley, who really made "House of Sand and Fog"

Best Actress: Charlize Theron

Supporting Actor: Benicio Del Toro

Supporting Actress: Shohreh Aghdashloo (haven't seen all of the movies, though)

Director: Sofia Coppola (although I guess it would be nice to see Peter Jackson rewarded for all his work on Lord of the Rings)

Costume: Lord of the Rings

Cinematography: City of God

Art Direction: Lord of the Rings

Writing (adapted): American Splendor

Writing (original): Lost in Translation (haven't seen all of them, though)

I have a bad premonition that RoTK is going to get prison fucked by all those old codgers that do the voting. It was the best movie I saw last year though.

Did anyone really like the song from LotR this year? I'm sorry to say Annie Lennox did nothing for me, and I adore all of the soundtracks (every single song on 'em) except for that one song. I find it horribly horribly annoying :(

*ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE*
Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER

Has everyone voting for Charlize Theron seen Whale Rider? I thought that girl did an amazing job. Shes not even an actor (or wasnt before this film), they just randomly picked her out of her school to do a screen test.

Also my husband met Charlize Theron a few years back and says shes a bitch, so I dont think she deserves to win it ;)

Curious. Personally, I thought Finding Nemo was a brilliantly crafted film both in terms of story and visuals. I haven't seen the Triplets, but I'm sure it's an excellent film as well. What made you feel it was more deserving?

I enjoyed Finding Nemo immensely, but on an artistic level I was blown away by Belleville.

I think there are 4 lines spoken in the movie. The rest is just musical commentary on a storyline that's a little weird at times, but that's the charm of it. Highly original style, mood, characters. I can only describe it as visual poetry.

good job! I kept thinking "damn that dorf was right" while watching tonight.

On the show tonight, I have to say that I really enjoyed it this year. The comedy actually made me lol several times which rarely happens. Scarlett Johannson looked gorgeous, and with the exception of Diane Lane (lil' too Las Vegas show girl) and Uma Thurman (whats that? a shower curtain?), the dresses made me drool.

My only disappointments were that Bill Murray didn't win Best Actor and that Sofia Coppolla didn't win Best Director.

I thought the show was really good. Billy Crystal was great, I was laughing hard at his Gollum. The Canadian's thanking LotR for not being eligible in the foreign film category was very LOL. And of course, Will Farrel and Jack Black singing together was just classic.

I do not like Annie Lennox :( I wouldn't have voted for that song.

Out of the predictions that I made (excluding the ones I "didn't know"), I got 18 out of 19 right.

And a clean sweep for Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings. Though I'm still disappointed that none of them got nominated in the acting categories (Sean Astin especially), I'm so happy they finally got the directing and best picture awards (and everything else too)!

I feel like such a nerd. I recognized about 90% of all award winners: do you think I watch the LoTR extra features a bit too much?

BTW, best song category: first Sting, then Elvis Costello, then Annie Lennox! Gawd, do you think 20 years earlier they ever talked about going up against each other some day for an Oscar? Add to that Phil Collins (presenter, and winner last year) and Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara of Second City fame, and the whole thing had a very late 70s early 80's feel. All that was missing was Martha Quinn doing the intros.
