Dancer in the Dark...

Post by Arborealus »

A perky musical tragedy?...Inherently disturbing, touching and deeply tragic...Beautifully moving and painful...A tremendous, heartrending portrayal by Bjork...Surreal juxtaposition of score and plot...

Wonderful film truely wonderful...

One of the best movies I've ever seen. You really feel for the characters in this movie. I like how the music scenes look more like an actual film and the "real life" scenes look like a documentary.
Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:
THIS is the way the world ends.

I honestly wasn't that much of a fan. Though it was directed by the creator of the Dogme 95 collective, it fell a bit short of the mark, and broke some of the rules set forth in the manifesto.

Parts of it were genius, parts of it were flat.

If you enjoyed it, you should check out the other Dogme 95 releases. I have a feeling you might like them better.

It wasn't intended to be Dogme 95...:)...good lord doing a musical as Dogme 95 would be hideously hard since dogme mandated that sound was recorded with the film and post shooting manipulation of sound was expressly forbidden...So unless you just happened to find an orchestra on each location...:D...

With Dogme 95 the challenge initially was to make one film it wasn't intended as a model for all Von Trier, Vinterberg etc's subsequent films...:)...That would be hellishly restrictive...Each member of the collective (Von Trier, Vinterberg, Kragh-Jacobsen, and Levring) were to make one film according to the manifesto...35 films have since been certified as Dogme 95...

Right, but it was my understanding that Dancer was originally intended to be Dogme. Can't remember if it was ever certified - I'm thinking not, but I had always been under the impression that it would have been, had it not been for the use of soundtrack score.

Regardless, I like some of the other Dogme films better. I guess I just felt that parts of Dancer were just too contrived...that parts were just *supposed* to be heartbreaking, and they tried their damnedest to be.

No Dancer was never meant to be Dogme. Extensive use of props, costuming, film in film etc and Lars Von Trier is credited as director, crane shots, weapons & murder...

The Idiots was Von Trier's sole Dogme film to date.

Could you enjoy this film if you don't like Bjork...Well that would depend what you don't like about her but odds are against she did the score and sang extensively...There might be some condolence in the fact that she hated making the film...:)

Here's is the Dogme 95 Vow of chastity..
1. Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).

2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being shot).

3. The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. (The film must not take place where the camera is standing; shooting must take place where the film takes place).

4. The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).

5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.

6. The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)

7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now.)

8. Genre movies are not acceptable.

9. The film format must be Academy 35 mm.

10. The director must not be credited.

Right on - That clarifies things a bit for me, thanks! Still not terribly fond of it, though. :?
