Laptop advice needed....what to buy?

Post by icknay »

I'm ready to buy my first laptop and have done lots of research, talked with salespeople, techs, friends, family yadayada. Something tells me I need to post here, too.
I don't need a monster laptop but I would like it to be able to handle EQ. The only real sticking point with me is that I want it to have a floppy. This may be a problem, I'm learning.

Since my needs are fairly simple I find it hard to justify spending a lot of dough for this.

So. In your opinion...should I order one from someone like Dell or HP? Try to have one custom made? I'd be happy with 1.5 gig processor, 20gig hard drive, 256 ram. If the system I buy has more that's cool but with anything beyond these parameters and price will become the most important issue.

One thing I've noticed is that Celeron processors are always cheaper. I've always heard bad things about Celeron...just how bad can it be?

THANKS in advance for yer thoughts.

I suggest a Dell Latitude D600. It runs EQ smooth as glass along with Halo. As for the floppy drive you can get it as an acessory (have to order this seperate) for the modular bay. I dont think any major band name is doing built in floppys any more, to heavy and not much function to them. The laptop goes for about 1200 to 1400 bucks with a 3 year warrenty. And get the burner for it, for 40 bucks extra you cant go wrong.

Got a D600 here myself with a 1.3GHz Pentium M, very sweet, very fast and I got the optional floppy. However I think the Latitude is more the business class, check the Insperion line as well, probably same config, just a little cheaper since it dosen't need all the LAN features for Corporate configs...

What do you need a floppy for? If you REALLY need on, then you can get a USB floppy ($30-40). If you just need to move files here and there, you can get a USB flash memory stick. I have both, and I use my stick more than the floppy.

Forget a laptop if you want to play EQ.

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one laptop capable of doing hardware T&L, required by the new graphics engine Sony swears is imminent.

I need a floppy drive. I shoot photos and upload them to the net. My sony mavica uses floppies. I use my camera and floppies virtually every day so I need a floppy drive. I suppose I'll have to settle for a modular one or an external one but that would suck...something else to keep up with, ya know?

Tthanks for the posts, folks.

try out a digital floppy and a memory stick reader, we use the Sony ones at work and they work great.
