HOWARD STERN YANKED OFF AIR
February 25, 2004

Just hours after he interviewed a guest named "Mr. Skin" about where to find obscure nude scenes of popular actresses, HOWARD STERN was pulled from six radio markets by disapproving radio network Clear Channel Communications. Starting Thursday, listeners in six cities, including Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, FLA; Rochester, NY; Louisville, KY; San Diego, CA; and Pittsburgh, PA, will have to go without the so-called "King of All Media" indefinitely. The suspension came as part of Clear Channel's new zero-tolerance policy toward indecent programming. Under FCC rules and federal law, radio stations and over-the-air television channels cannot air material containing references to sexual and excretory functions between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., when children may be tuning in. It's not clear exactly which part of Stern's program incited the ban, but, in a statement, Clear Channel Radio Chief Executive JOHN HOGAN called Stern's show "vulgar, offensive and insulting, not just to women and African Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency." He added: "We will not air Howard Stern on Clear Channel stations until we are assured that his show will conform to acceptable standards of responsible broadcasting."

Yeah, but it's been great radio hearing him talk about it since.

Honestly, I think the FCC needs to do a quick double-take regarding their crusade. People don't need to be told what's wholesome anymore, nor is that what garners ratings.

This is bullshit pure and simple, I really don't need the government telling me what I can listen to. If anyone has a problem with the content on the Stern show there is a simple solution.... Change the friggin station. The FCC will try to say they are trying to protect the youth but fact of the matter is, kids hear much worse in school every day.

I wonder if there is a company that sells Burkas that I can buy stock in, it seems like that is the direction we are going.

As if these fucks didn't know that Howards Stern show was always offensive. It's funny, companies like this Clear Channel company will endorse offensive or vulgar shows like this, until they step on to something a little too "close to home" for them.

Who the fuck doesn't already know that the Howard Stern Show is an often offensive/vulgar/sexist/racist show?

EVERYONE who pays attention to any small portion of the media knows this. Amish people even know Howard Stern is an offensive radio host...

What kills me about this is they're not even showing boobies, they're just talking about them. WTF?

The fucking FCC is out of control.

This is not the FCC, this is Clear Channel Communications pulling the trigger.

The only thing the FCC fucked up was letting Clear Channel get so huge to begin with that they can have such a massive influence across so many local media markets.

I have no problem with Clear Channel not wanting to air certain programming. I think this is a publicity move on their part to look like they are doing something to address "the problem".

The big kicker, is that Stern doesn't work for Clear Channel...Clear Channel just syndicates his show in nearly every one of their markets, because he's guaranteed ratings and revenue. I listened to him in Dallas, I listened to him in Orlando, and I listen to him now in Vegas.

CBS, Stern's employer, is also cracking down on him because of the superbowl. They said if he receives a single fine, they'll pull him. And he's been threatening to do it anyways.

Regardless, he's had Mr. Skin on plenty of times before.

edit, and I agree Voro with it being a publicity move. Just like their huge list of banned songs after 9/11. It's a crock of shit.

Clear Channel is doing this (supposedly) because the FCC is increasing it's fines for shit like this tenfold. I know they've been itching to get Bubba out ever since they bought 98 Rock in Tampa, prolly the same for Howard. IMO, the FCC bullshit was just an excuse.

However, the FCC is seriously getting crazy with the fines and stuff.

well they need to raise the fine caps really.

the maximum they could have hit CBS for was $27,000 or something.

since CBS was selling airtime at a rate exponentially higher than that per second, the FCC's fines had no bite.

that being said, i think the witchhunt that is going on is silly.

Clear Channel was just fined recently for something like $750,000 by the FCC. That's one of the reasons they're cracking down on their programs.
