I used to live with a girl that would make that every morning for us for breakfast.... ahhh the Santa Cruz hippie life, a Santa Cruz Speedball (4 bong hits and a triple espresso) and bread and honey for breakfast, life was so simple
The first duty of a patriot is to question the government
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons white sugar
2 cups hot water
2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
2 eggs, beaten
2 tsp salt
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease Baking Pan (9 x 13).
In a large bowl, mix the shortening, sugar, and hot water. Allow to cool until lukewarm, and mix in the yeast until dissolved. Mix in the egg, salt, and flour. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size.
On a floured work space. Work into 16 rolls, and allow to rise again until doubled in size.
Bake until a fork inserted in the middle roll comes clean.
Caveats most common mistake is adding the active yeast to Hot Water which kills it so the dough does not rise. Also dont overwork the dough when making the rolls just cut into sixteen equal sized pieces and flatten them dusting flour on all sides...you dont wanna work more flour into the dough here, cut dust and space about equally...they will fill the pan and shape themselves during baking. If they aren't browning well after 10 min you can brush then with a bit of butter.
This makes 16 big rolls...don't worry about having too many...They are great for breakfast...recipe will half well if you need though...
I don't really know if this is exclusively a southern thing or not, but if you like the bread and honey combo, you should really try buttered rolls or biscuits drizzled with ribbon cane syrup.
