File Association problem

Post by Dups. »

Ok, Here's the scenerio.

Using Windows XP Professional

I have these par1 files that are not associated with any program. So I right click on the file and select Open With. This opens up the select a program window. The program I want to use is Quickpar. It's not in the list so I click on Browse. I find the program and select it. I had the option of "always use this program for this file type" selected. I clicked on OK once I selected Quickpar and then AC/Dsee Image Viewer pops up.
I check and the icon for this file is an AC/DSee icon. So now this damn file type is set as an AC/DSee file.

So I figured, "Oh I must have simply selected the wrong program." I go over the steps again, slowly this time, and I make sure I select Quickpar. Upon doing this it brings me back to the select a program window where it does not have Quickpar selected, nor is it even listed. It has AC/Dsee selected again... this being because it's the first program listed in alphabetical order. So for some reason I cannot get Quickpar to be selected as a valid program to open files. I used to be able to do so. It is listed on my other Windows XP profile.

With this current Windows XP profile (both with admin rights) , I actually have some PAR2 files associated with Quickpar. So I "should" be able to select this damn program. It's obvious I was able to do so at one time because on PAR2 files I can right click on it and have the "Open with Quickpar" option enabled.

I tested something out by right clicking on a par2 file , it has Open with Quickpar and open with... I clicked on Open with... and it does not have Quickpar listed. Usually it's listed under recommended programs when you select a program yourself.

/\/\/\/\/\

So my questions are as follows.

1. Why can't I associate par1 files with the program Quickpar?
2. Why was I able to associate the non associated PAR2 files with Quickpar? Then when I try to associate the non associated par1 files it will not associate.

If you need any questions answered I'll gladly answer them.

Thanks in advance guys.

Try opening an Windows Explorer (or My Computer, etc).

From the menu, go to Tools -> Folder Options.

The third tab is File Types.

Scroll down to your file type and select it.

In the "Detail for 'XXX' extension" box, click the Change button.

You can change the program association from here. If you don't find your program, click the Browse button and locate the executable associated with your program.

Hope that helps. It is just an alternative way to do what you are trying to do. The way you have done it should work, but you might want to try doing it the other way.

I go the lazy way by just running the par program and selecting my .par file. Which is probably more work actually but there you go. I don't normally need pars so I don't use it often.
