or maybe warrior.

maybe dark elf.

maybe a dark elf hunter.

I'm going to play human warrior or rogue in retail. I may play a horde character for beta to see the other side and not spoil the alliance fun I will have in retail.

Night Elf Cleric, Druid or Ranger.

I can't see me playing on the Horde side. I may *try* an Undead just to see what the other side is like.

I suspect that Blood Elves, Naga, Pandaren, etc will be the "options" available to Blizzard for future enhancements. I wouldn't be surprised to see one or more of these races available in the first expansion.

The Alliance is the combined faction for Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, and Gnomes.

The Horde is the combined faction for Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, and Undead.

Essentially, it is akin to the "good" and "evil" races in EQ. Horde characters can visit each other's cities, but an Alliance character would be KOS in all cities.

The current game mechanics add the following distinctions:

Alliance races have the Paladin class while Horde races do not.
Horde races have the Shaman class while the Alliance races do not.
Alliance races speak their native tongue plus Common.
Horde races speak their native tongue plus Orcish.
NOT FINALIZED - Alliance and Horde characters cannot group or guild (this is pending beta review)

All in all it is a more fair split than the good and evil races/cities in EQ with an aim to balance the one side evenly against the other. The class distribution amongst the races ensures that Horde and Alliance each have the same number of races per class.
