Looking for a new box
Looking for a new box
My hard drive is driving me crazy with this loud ass pitching sound it makes whenever it is on. Looking for a very quiet box for my pc, any recommendation folks?

I just got a Sonata. But it's still in the box. But people say it's really quiet.Shanter wrote:My hard drive is driving me crazy with this loud ass pitching sound it makes whenever it is on. Looking for a very quiet box for my pc, any recommendation folks?
However, that wont really solve the problem if you have loud squeaky components.
I'd suggest purchasing a new hard drive. Perhaps that one is going to die soon anyway.

I'd guess your hard drive isn't long for this world, it sounds like the bearings are failing. Are you sure it isn't a fan making the noise? Disks don't usually last too long at all once they start to whine louder than normal.
I really like the Sonata case, super quiet. My CPU fan is the loudest part of my setup, and it's a low noise Zalman (running @ 2200RPM).

I really like my Sonata, but I wish they hadn't poked those damn holes that spell out Antec on the side because it makes the box considerable louder than it could be (which is still damn quiet!).

Seriously, I am thinking of sticking some of that grey packaging foam inside the case behind the letters to see if it cuts the noise down...

Do you have the 120mm fan hooked up to the speed controlled fan output connector on the power supply?archeiron wrote:Seriously, I am thinking of sticking some of that grey packaging foam inside the case behind the letters to see if it cuts the noise down...
With a "regular" CPU fan mine was a bit noisy, after putting in the Zalman it's nearly silent. Except when making movies, then the fans will spin up a bit after 20 minutes or so of crunching video.

*nods* I definately have it hooked up correctly. It isn't that it is even remotely noisy. It is just that it could be even quieter (nearly silent) without the holes on the side and probably if it wasn't near a wall where the fan noise is being bounced off.Aabidano wrote:Do you have the 120mm fan hooked up to the speed controlled fan output connector on the power supply?archeiron wrote:Seriously, I am thinking of sticking some of that grey packaging foam inside the case behind the letters to see if it cuts the noise down...

*shrug* I guess I am overcompensating now that I have thrown away the jet turbine engine that served as my last computer.
p.s. the easiest way to tell if you have the fan hooked up correctly (without opening the case) is to reboot and see if it gets louder while booting
