It's actually supposed to run fairly well on relatively minimal systems. They've said if you can play Warcraft 3 on your system, you will be able to play WoW. This is because Blizzard knows how to code their games and run them efficiently rather than stressing the shit out of systems like everything post-Luclin in EQ... 

This is because Blizzard wrote a game in an era of graphics cards doing all of the specialized work for 3D rendering. In any case, by all reports WoW will run well on lower end comps (without all the bells and whistles turned on, of course!)

EQ has always been a hog, partially due to DirectX and partially due to sloppy coders. I had a decent mid-range system in beta, EQ ran terribly mainly due to their choice of DX rather than OpenGL.
Both DX and the hardware support for it have improved markedly since then. EQs CPU usage is probably still double what it actually needs though.
