Java..

Post by Akaran_D »

Friend of mine says he managed to get java disabled on his IE on XP.

Don't ask me how.

Any of you guys know how to re-enable before I have to head down there?

He probably reinstalled XP. I am guessing that Microsoft had to remove it somehow. The first time I installed the newest version of IE, I had it. When I reinstalled XP later and downloaded the newest version of IE, there was no Java. Going to the MS website I think, I read that they were no longer allowed to include it in their software packages.

Using IE's help feature, I think I actually found the link within the error area. It tells you that it is not an actual error (which it reallyu isn't).

Microsoft had to remove "their" version of Java due to court order after a battle with Sun. You can get the latest version of Java to install at Sun's Website.

<a href="http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkID=335197"> Download Java Software (Sun Microsystems Web Site) </a>

Not a Microsoft product. Microsoft no longer offers the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Note that Microsoft offers no support or warranties for the download offered.

Click <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/"> here </a> for a walkthrough and background of why these changes have occured.
In a settlement agreement reached in January 2001 to resolve a dispute over Microsoft's distribution of its Java implementation, Sun and Microsoft agreed to limit the duration of Microsoft's use of Sun's source code and compatibility test suites to support the MSJVM. Because some developers and enterprises have expressed concern about their ability to eliminate dependencies on the MSJVM in the time period originally provided, Sun and Microsoft have agreed to a longer period to permit a smooth transition from the MSJVM.

Of course, they don't have to remove it.. so if you install 2000, then upgrade to XP you still have it.. same applies to upgrading IE versions.
