Video Game Cheats, Codes and Walkthroughs
I have been playing video games all my life and I am quite a natural at playing video games. I simply pick up a joystick/controller and boom within 2 or 3 minutes I know all the controls and play like I have been playing the game forever.
I have beaten many games in my life time. However, I very very rarely used any cheats for video games. The only time I ever use cheats would be when I have allready beaten a game and I just want to see if I missed anything or just want to try different options that aren't there without cheat codes. Eg: Using cheat codes for unlcoking special types of car in a racing game.
I find that now kids and several adults are always using cheats when playing games. I find I would not get as much satisfaction to beating a game if I were to just use cheats all through the game.
Now, with the internet around you can hardly go to any gaming site without a link to cheats, codes or walkthroughs. Beating a game today does not take much skill because of all these tools. You used to be able to gloat when you beat a game back in the day when cheats were more scarce and barely any walkthroughs existed.
Now as for online gaming. That's when cheating really pisses me off. I mean, if you are cheating on a game you play alone. I do not care. Just do not come and say you beat the game and it's easy. But when you are playing against me, why the hell would you cheat? Does someone that uses online game cheats actually get the satisfaction of winning? You are not the one winning, it's the cheats. For example. I used to play Quake 1 way back in the day and I would play on a server provided by an ISP. I was easily in the top 5 best players, however there were always 2 or 3 guys that I could not beat. I would give them a good challenge but they always had the extra little edge on me. I would sometimes ask if they used any cheats and they would deny it. Then about 5 or 6 years later when I was not quaking anymore I met up with the guy IRL and I asked him if he was using any cheats in Quake when we used to play. He was like "Hell yeah!, I was using water hack, wall hack (see through walls), sometimes I would use the lightning gun hack. Why? Weren't you using hacks as well?" I told him I did not and he was stunned. He was like "Shit man, and you would even beat me sometimes!!" This is not bragging on my gaming skills, there are for sure people that are better then me.
However, when I lose I want to know that I lost to a fair fight and beaten by someone that was actually better then me. Not by some lameass haxors!
Most of the time I do not play too many online games competitivly because if you lose you are ALWAYS wondering to yourself.... is the other person cheating? It depends on the game of course.
What is your take on people using cheats on games, online and offline?

I have no sense of decency. This way , all my other senses are enhanced!
Most games I'll not cheat on. However, in certain cases where I want to get past a part, or if I wanted to see everything (like in the case with Final Fantasy games) I'll use a walkthrough. From time to time I'll check if I'm stumped over how to get an item or finish a quest, but for the most part I'll play cheat free. And ALWAYS cheat free with online games.
The only spoiler site I'll use is http://www.gamefaqs.com anyways.

I've used Gameshark a few times for PS and PS2, but I've never used any tool during gaming online, nor would I. I generally use cheats on games I've already beaten, using them online is the pinnacle of gheyness as far as I'm concerned. I was an avid TFCer for a long time, and played competitively in several leagues. It finally gave up league play because cheating even started popping up in the best policed leagues. In any online game the best team or player should win, not the team or player with the best hacks.
What I've found in online cheating is that most hackers are just griefers, their sole purpose of playing is to deny you the ability to have fun playing the game you enjoy. It seems like very few people who hack are actually looking for an edge over other players. Hackers in general just want to piss people off.

Lots of people have the mentality that my son has. It's just cool to use cheat codes, makes you kind of feel like you are a hacker. My son loves using cheat codes, believe it or not, it gives him the same feeling of accomplishment as I get when I beat a game straight up, because he *got one over* on the devs or whatever and was able to utilize the cooler aspects of the game without sacrficing as much time as I did.
I had a problem on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault getting past the sub pens... I must have replayed that part a dozen or so times but I never had enough ammo/health to get through it... I tossed on a god mode cheat to get past it and then turned it off afterwards and enjoyed the rest of the game.Dregor Thule wrote:What's the point of playing the game if you cheat at it? Small stuff like that...
Now walkthroughs... When I play games like KotOR or Final Fantasy.. I want to see everything, so I will get a walkthrough. With KotOR I beat the game once without a walkthrough as a dark side jedi, but when I went back through as a light side, I used the walkthrough to see/finish some of those quests that I didn't do before.
i only use walkthorughs on dumbass puzzles, like if i cant find a "key" or that godamn switch to open the door is behind 4 invisable barrels, or some stupid shit like that, when it comes to fights il never use a cheat or a walkthrough/strat guide,
becouse fight strategys are fun
goddamn scavenger hunts to find peices to open a fucking door, are not
cheats on the other hand are just flat out stupid

I'll use a walkthrough to spare myself frustration - I love the challenge of a game, but there are plenty of times when there's just a stupid design bit or a particularly frustrating portion of a game that's eliminating your enjoyment altogether, and it's quite easy to fix with a quick glance at a walkthrough.

Offline, I'd use them whenever I felt like it, either, because I'm stuck or something about the game is just plain pissing me off. No other real reason other than if I don't do it, the game will end up being one of many that never get finished because I'd rather play something else w/ my limited free time.
About the only "cheat" i'll use are the Clue Books, and then only if I'm in a bind and can't figgure out what to do next, as for downloading cheats, Never!! the original Delta Force was totally and completely ruined by people who had all the cheat codes running, nothing pisses you off more than when you are trying to have fun and you get wasted by a dickhead in god mode or someone invis'd, and then there were those asswipes that had the super jump hack that could see the entire battlefield because they Hulk-jumped a mile into the sky.

Amen to that. I never use cheats, but I'll often take a look at a walkthrough if I can't figure out what the game wants me to do at a certain point.murr durr wrote:I'll use a walkthrough to spare myself frustration - I love the challenge of a game, but there are plenty of times when there's just a stupid design bit or a particularly frustrating portion of a game that's eliminating your enjoyment altogether, and it's quite easy to fix with a quick glance at a walkthrough.

Generally I dislike cheating. As always though, there are exceptions, like the find the damn switch one mentioned above (but in those cases, it's gamefaqs all the way). I'm not a hardcore puzzle solver, but I will generally give it one or two tries at the least.
Now, once I've beaten a game, or a game I just want to sit down and have some fun with (Sims is a good example here) I'll plunk out hundreds of cash codes and see what develops.. but rarely do I "cheat" in a game.

I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

"Video Game Cheats, Codes and Walkthroughs"
I have different views based on whether or not it's a multiplayer game. I don't believe in modifying a game client to give me an unfair advantage over another human opponent, but if I can beat them in the game environment normally or through exploiting my interaction (not through a code or hack) the environment itself, it's an even table. Like if you figure out that certain walls allow you to shoot through them, but they act that way for everyone.
Walkthoughs, Cluebooks, Codes in Single player games? Who cares?? Seriously - are people such purists they are mortally offended if another person, in the privacy of thier own room, types "teh sekrit codez" to skip the to a better part of a game or to suddenly arm thier RTS army with "ultra nuclear bazooka infantry" to annihalate the "Hard" army the computer fielded? Sometimes you are tired of dealing with a puzzle or a pain-in-the-ass part of the game, sometimes you just want to massively destroy a computer opponent.
"OMG, this thoughtless fucktard read a walkthough to know they need to say XXZZY! It took me a week to figure that out! They are a cheat!!!"
If you want to do ANYTHING to a single player game, it's no skin off of anyone's back. If you want to BRAG about it (either admiting to cheating or not), then you are just an idiot.
